2025 Veterans Merit Winner

Congratulations to Billy Kinchin (Moseley CC)

Billy Kinchin has claimed victory in the 2025 W&W Veterans Merit, defeating Keith Hanley with a score of 21-11 in the final. Congratulations to Billy, and commiserations to Keith. This marks Billy's third triumph in the County Merit. He began his journey by overcoming prelim winner Tony Williams in a thrilling match that ended 21-20. In the quarter-finals, he bested KHP's Ivan Smout 21-17 before facing off against his teammate Ronnie Regan in a closely contested semi-final, finishing at 21-19.

Keith's path to the final started with a first-round win against I. Tucker, again decided by the slimmest of margins at 21-20. In the quarter-finals, he dispatched Triplex's Chris Baker with a score of 21-15, setting the stage for his semi-final against Roy Wooley of the Greville, where he emerged victorious at 21-15.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to KGV for providing a fantastic green and exceptional hospitality, as well as immense gratitude to the competitors and supporters who contributed to the event by assisting with cards, measures, and the overall organization of the competition.

Supporting grass roots community groups

This year we will be investing over £1 Million through our Local Community Spaces fund. This funding is available to community groups throughout the UK to provide a safe space for people to meet and be together.

The application window for this grant opens Wednesday 7th May 2025, 10am and will close Wednesday 28th May 2025, 10am.*

Grants from £10,000 – £20,000**

We know accessible community spaces can be a lifeline for local people, and many of these spaces require funding to repair, renovate and develop them so that they can continue delivering vital activities and services. In addition, loneliness and isolation continue to be highlighted through our Community Insight Survey as top areas of concern for local communities throughout the UK.

To be eligible to apply for this fund, your community space must be an accessible place where members of the community can interact, seek support and access a variety of services and activities.

Through our Local Community Spaces Fund, we will continue playing our part in helping to fund safe and welcoming community spaces that bring people together, connect communities and address loneliness and isolation. We have invested £2.5million in community hubs since 2022, and for 2025, will commit a further £1.25million.

*The planned closing date for this grant is Wednesday 28th May, 10am, however, if we have a high level of applications, we may close the application window earlier. If we are oversubscribed in a particular geographical area of operation, we may choose to close individual areas before closing the total grant programme. Any changes to the application date will be communicated on the Asda Foundation website, social medial channels and grant management system to provide prior notice of the change.

**Asda Foundation funding must be contributing to at least 50% of your total project cost. We will fund up to 90% of your total project cost.

W&W well represented in Merit

As the sun dipped below the horizon at the Florence Bowling and Tennis Club in Stoke, Shannon Kernick emerged triumphant in the 2024 BCGBA 18 - 23 Open Championship.

After a remarkable day of bowling, Shannon contended against her teammate Olivia Fishwick in a tightly contested Final. The two Baldwin BC players showcased their skills evenly, but it was Shannon who ultimately claimed the trophy with a score of 21-17.

Congratulations to both ladies from everyone at Warwickshire & Worcestershire.

Saturday, 27th July 2024, is a day that Greg Smith will forever cherish... the day he triumphed as a two-time BCGBA Senior Individual Merit Champion.

As the sun dips below the horizon at the splendid Pennfields BC in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, let’s take a moment to reflect on what has become one of the most exhilarating days in the crown green bowling calendar.

A competitive field of 64 kicked off the day at 10am. Right from the start of the First Round, the Welsh players made a mark, with impressive victories from Bryn G Hughes and Frances Penlington. Also showcasing their skills early on were Martin Lloyd (Shropshire), Tom Eccles (Greater Manchester), and Alan Manuel (Lancashire), all achieving single-figure wins amidst the shifting weather. In the standout match of the First Round, Greg Smith (2013 Champion) faced Glyn Cookson (1997 Champion). With an outstanding performance, Greg secured a commanding 21-4 victory—was this an early sign of his dominance? More Yorkshire talent emerged as Gareth Coates and Michael Sweeney notched up significant wins in the First Round, alongside Stephen Pratt (North Midlands). As the first 32 blocks concluded, it was time for Round Two...

As the day unfolded, the crowds began to swell, and attention turned to Round Two, which featured an array of exciting games. Out of 16 matches, 9 were decided by margins of less than 6 chalks, particularly with some standout players from Round One exiting the competition. Chris Mordue showcased his exceptional form with a decisive 21-5 win over David Molyneux (Lancashire), while Gareth Coates also impressed by defeating Darren Naylorr (Cumbria) 21-6. However, the highlight of the round was undoubtedly the thrilling encounter between Robin Smith and Greg Smith. Despite a fiercely contested match, Greg narrowly secured victory with a score of 21-20, leaving Robin justifiably proud of his outstanding performance.

As we progressed to the Last 16, past champions began to demonstrate why they had earned that distinction. Chris Mordue secured his spot in the quarter-finals with a solid 21-15 win against Bryn G Hughes, while his teammate 'Pinky' Jon Edmondson triumphed over Cheshire's Andy Hamman with a score of 21-14. The 2021 Champion, Ross Dunkley, exhibited his skill by defeating Michael Sweeney 21-12, and Greg returned to his winning ways with a commanding 21-6 victory over Lyndon Carr (NL&F).

The Pennfields venue basked in glorious summer sunlight as we entered the Quarter-Finals. The anticipated clash between Pudsey stalwarts Chris Mordue and Jon Edmondson tilted in favor of the 2018 Champion, with a score of 21-14. Meanwhile, Lee Longland (NL&F), who had quietly navigated through the rounds with impressive bowling, triumphed over Baz Lowden (Cumbria) in an exhilarating match that ended 21-19. Ross Dunkley maintained his momentum with a convincing 21-11 win against Matt Horton (North Midlands), securing his place in the Semi-Finals. The last Quarter-Final featured two bookmaker favorites; however, Greg put forth a dominant performance, defeating Gareth Coates 21-5.

The Semi-Finals presented a showdown featuring three former Champions alongside NL&F County Merit Champion, Lee Longland. With 100/1 odds against him, could Lee pull off an upset? Unfortunately, it proved to be a step too far as Chris showcased his consistency, emerging victorious with a score of 21-15. Despite the Semi-Final defeat, Lee had much to be proud of. The other Semi-Final saw the talented pair of Greg and Ross, who share Warwick and Worcester ties, battle it out. A tightly contested match concluded with Greg moving forward to the Final, winning 21-17.

And so it came down to Chris Mordue versus Greg Smith—the 2013 Champion facing off against the 2018 Champion. Who would emerge victorious for a second time? The audience was in for a thrilling spectacle, including hundreds tuning in to the YouTube live stream by Steve Davies and Andy Cairns. Ultimately, there could be only one champion that day, and it was Greg who claimed the crown with an impressive performance, sealing a 21-12 victory.

Now, the anticipation builds for the 'Champion of Champions' in September.

BCGBA Senior Merit, Pennfields BC, Staffs

Good luck to our five hopefuls who will be representing us at the prestigious BCGBA Senior Individual Merit competition taking place at Pennfields in Wolverhampton. This event is an exciting opportunity for our players to showcase their skills on a larger stage.

In the first round of matches, our Merit winner, Greg Smith, is set to face off against Glynn Cookson from Cheshire. Additionally, runner-up Ross Dunkley will be competing against Kieran Clark from Cumbria. Meanwhile, Adam Patrick is also up against another competitor from Cumbria, Darren Naylor. Carl Fielding has a challenging match ahead as he plays against Chris Mordue from Yorkshire, and finally, John Evans will be going head-to-head with Martin Simcock from the Potteries & District.

Men's Senior County Review - July

Final games of the group stage.

The BCGBA Endsleigh Senior County Championship group stages wrapped up yesterday, revealing the four Counties moving on to the Semi-Finals. The Sections hosted intense matches, a few of which were decided in thrilling fashion.

In Section One, an intense match unfolded between Greater Manchester and Cumbria. The game saw a back-and-forth dynamic, with both teams displaying a strong performance. Ultimately, Greater Manchester secured a well-deserved victory with a 21-chalk lead. Meanwhile, Derbyshire showcased their skill at their new home venue in Marehay BC, securing an impressive 100-chalk win. The success at this venue hints that it may become a popular choice in the future! Despite Lancashire C.G.B.A's valiant effort with a 46-chalk victory at Wigan Subscription, Derbyshire's commanding 54-chalk lead from the away leg ensured their triumph. These results propelled Greater Manchester to the top of the table, securing their spot as the first Semi-finalists.

Moving on to Section Two, the most anticipated game of the day unfolded. Warwick & Worcester had been leading the table comfortably, with Wales as their challengers who had the chance to surpass them. As the afternoon progressed, the possibility of a Welsh victory was high due to remarkable performances from both sides. However, when the competition intensified, Warwick & Worcester's seasoned players demonstrated their expertise and secured a narrow victory by just 3 chalks, solidifying their position at the top of the Section. Meanwhile, Shropshire Crown Green Bowls were pitted against the Potteries & District Bowls. Both teams maximized the advantage of their home venues, with Shropshire aiming for a significant win that could propel them above both Warwick & Worcester and Wales, depending on the outcome of the Welsh match. Ultimately, their efforts fell slightly short, but a 32-chalk victory for Shropshire was sufficient to elevate them to the Runner-up position in the Section.

Narrow victories were the highlight of the first game in Section Three. North Midlands clinched a tight 23 chalk win at Haunchwood #1, while Staffordshire secured a modest 12 chalk victory at Amery Unionist BC. This marked another two points for North Midlands, claiming their second win of the season. In contrast, Yorkshire CGBA continued their dominant streak in Section Three. They outplayed Merseyside, boasting 19 winners from the 24 games and achieving a substantial 128-chalk winning margin. With these results factored into the tables, Yorkshire emerged victorious in the Section, earning maximum points and an impressive aggregate of +272 over the three games.

In the thrilling finale of Section Four, South Yorkshire Bowling faced off against Cheshire in a high-stakes showdown. The intense battle unfolded at both venues with close single-figure aggregates dictating the action. South Yorkshire emerged triumphant in both legs, clinching victory with an impressive aggregate of 16 chalks. With this triumph, South Yorkshire secured the coveted last spot in the Semi-Finals. And there you have it - the four Semi-Finalists set to compete on Sunday, 4th August.

This month's focus… Banter vs Bullying

What is Banter‭?‬

Banter is teasing or joking that is amusing and friendly between people‭ ‬where there is no power imbalance‭. ‬Most importantly it‭ ‬is an exchange and not one way‭ ‬–‭ ‬each giving and taking an equal share of the teasing‭. ‬It is neither designed to nor has the effect of shaming‭, ‬upsetting‭, ‬belittling‭, ‬offending or otherwise making anyone hearing it uncomfortable‭.‬

What is Bullying‭?‬

Bullying is repeated behaviour that causes physical or emotional harm whether intended or not‭. ‬It can be offensive‭, ‬insulting‭, ‬humiliating‭, ‬abusive‭, ‬intimidating or malicious‭. ‬Bullying doesn’t require intent‭, ‬what is important is the impact it has on the person being bullied‭.‬

When does banter cross the line‭?‬

In a group situation‭, ‬if someone seems to get teased more than others‭, ‬or is the repeated target of a joke‭, ‬then it’s not banter anymore‭. ‬That person is being singled out‭. ‬Often people will not be confident enough to stand up for themselves if they are hurt by something‭. ‬They don’t want to be considered someone who can’t take a joke‭, ‬so they will often laugh along to not draw attention to themselves‭. ‬This means everyone is still under the‭ ‬illusion that this is banter‭, ‬not bullying‭, ‬and it will only be reinforced‭! ‬Don’t be a bystander‭ ‬–‭ ‬if you suspect some banter has become offensive to anyone involved‭, ‬don’t laugh‭. ‬Even better‭ ‬–‭ ‬call it out‭! ‬Just because someone calls it banter‭, ‬it doesn’t mean it is banter‭!‬

2024 Veterans Merit Winner

Congratulations to Paul Hemming (The George)

Congratulations to Paul "Mr Angry" Hemming from The George, who triumphed over Stephen Davies from Wootton Hall with a close score of 21-20 in this year's W&W Veterans Merit final held at The Raven on Friday, May 18.

A new competition format was tested for the 2024 season, with a qualifying night on May 17 resulting in 8 players from 4 greens advancing to the finals. Qualifiers from Hall Green included Tony Eades and Paul Johnson from The Greville, Steve Turner and Paul Hemming from Boldmere Sports, Chris Baker and Stephen Green, and from M&B Portland Road, Dave Clarke and Stephen Davies.

Every match on finals night was hotly contested, with all 10 games having scores no lower than 16.

In the quarter-finals matchup, Stephen Green from Bradford Arms outplayed Chris Baker from Triplex with a score of 21-16. The next match saw Steve Turner from Bradford Arms fall to Paul Hemming in the same scoreline of 21-16. Following that, Paul Johnson from Water Orton competed against Stephen Davies from Wootton Hall, with Stephen emerging victorious at 21-17, the same score with which Tony Eades from Bradford Arms defeated Dave Clarke in the fourth game of the round.

Moving on to the semi-finals, Stephen Green faced off against Paul Hemming, and Stephen Davies played against Tony Eades. Once more, both matches ended with scores of 21-17, securing Paul and Stephen Davies a spot in the final.

The final match was an intense showdown under the floodlights, with the lead changing hands multiple times throughout the night. Despite Stephen leading 20-15 towards the end, Paul mounted a remarkable comeback to clinch victory at 21-20.

"Mr Angry," along with all the players who participated on that memorable Friday night, displayed exceptional skill.

Paul and Stephen will now represent Warwick & Worcester at the BCGBA Jack and Jean Isherwood Championship in Prees, Shropshire, on July 3rd. We wish both players the best of luck in the Nationals.

2024 Ladies' Merit Winner

Congratulations to Julie Gardner (The Baldwin)

Congratulations to Julie Gardner for securing victory in the W&W Ladies Individual Merit, prevailing over Mandy Williams with a score of 21-17 at the Warwick & Worcester Ladies Merit event hosted at Boldmere Sports on Monday, May 6th. The merit attracted a total of 18 ladies on the Bank Holiday Monday, with thrilling preliminary matches between Emily Kernick & Maureen Gamble and Shannon Kernick & Anne O'Loughlin. Emily and Shannon emerged victorious from their matches, securing places in the final 16-competition and setting up an exciting clash against each other.

In the round of 16, Julie triumphed over Jayne Bates with a score of 21-17, while Mandy Williams defeated Deb Spencer 21-15 to secure their spots as finalists. Notable winners from this round included Shannon beating her sister Emily 21-18, Wendy Bennett besting Jackie Manders 21-16, Sharnie Harvey overcoming Jodie Pritchard 21-20, Mena Jones outplaying Diane Hearnden with a score of 21-15, Olivia Fishwick securing a victory over Jenny Walsh 21-13, and Michelle Jones defeating Sarah Hall 21-18 in the final match.

The Quarter-finals saw Julie facing off against Shannon, Wendy engaging in a match against Sharnie, Mandy Williams confronting Mena Jones, and Olivia Fishwick challenging Michelle Jones. Julie emerged victorious with a score of 21-14, while Mandy Williams secured a 21-13 win, advancing alongside Sharnie Harvey with a close 21-20 win over Wendy and Michelle Jones who triumphed 21-11 over Olivia.

Moving into the Semifinals, Julie was up against Sharnie and Mandy faced off against Michelle. Julie secured a 21-18 victory, and Mandy triumphed 21-16, setting the stage for an exciting final showdown to determine the competition's winner.

The day showcased exceptional talent in bowling, and a special thanks to Boldmere Sports for providing the use of their bottom green throughout the event.

Best wishes to the four players advancing to the All-Britain event on July 13th!

Junior Players Needed

We're looking for keen Under 18 bowlers

I hope you're well.

After the disappointment of last year’s lack of Junior Team events, Warwick & Worcester have affiliated with British Parks alongside the current events from British Crown Green to try and offer a fuller calendar of competitions for those under the age of 18.

I will be working closely with my counterpart from Warwickshire Parks, Ben Wright to try and catch as many of our local juniors as possible.

Attached is a form for registering the interest of any juniors in your club who would like to play for Warwick & Worcester in Junior County competitions. We are interested in hearing from experienced junior players and those new to the game.

Please complete the form with your availability before the 6th of March 2024 so that it can be shared onwards with the selection committee, and we can decide how many teams to enter in each event.

If you have a junior who you don’t think is quite ready yet, we can also arrange for coaching for players of all experience, which will be provided free by qualified & insured coaches.

When you have registered a player’s interest to play, we will send out our safeguarding forms for completion to protect and provide all the information to keep our juniors safe.

Crown Green – Level 1 Coaching Course

WWCBA have arranged for a Level 1 CROWN GREEN Coaches Course through Coach Bowls. This is the only crown green course arranged in our area. ONLY 12 places are available. A notice has been sent to all club secretaries.

The Course runs over two Sundays 30/07/23 and 24/09/23 with plenty of support available from WWCBA Coaches.

The fee to Coach Bowls will be £145 paid in advance with a BCGBA Bursary of £65 and WWCBA Members will also get £65 upon successful completion.

We invite ALL NEW registered bowlers from the WWCBA Registrar List (Not BCGBA Card Renewals or Lost Cards) who have registered within the past year If your BCGBA Registration number is 21193 or greater you will be eligible to play. The format is subject to the number of entries and cost only £3 with some prize money thanks to the kind sponsorship of Copson Builders.

Limiting the Registration to this year ensures that players will be playing matches against people of similar experience and have a chance to enjoy a merit competition experience. As the notice implies the further adaptation ensures a levelling-up of abilities to use a unique rule of Jack to Opponent.

However, we have registered over 400 people since last year’s event, so we do need entries quickly to prepare facilities or adapt the event.

The rules of the competition will follow the standard “laws of the game” with one exception of the following: “The Loser shall be the Leader and have the first attempt to set a mark at the succeeding end”. (Law 3.2) to be known as Jack to Opponent “J2O”

We hope to run if possible as a round-robin (several games of 11-up) qualifiers to a last 4 playing a knockout final (21-up). However, the event rules would need flexible adaptation and to encourage Juniors to take part which would be dependent on the entry acceptance agreed by the competitions Committee.

Donations Welcomed

Sadly on the 14th of June a beloved Husband, Dad, Grandad, Brother, Father-in-law, Uncle and Friend, Mick McGuinness, passed away.

In his memory and by way of thank you from his family and friends to City Hospital, Birmingham for the amazing care he received. His brother Gez and nephew Sean will be running the Solihull Half Marathon on the 13th of August 2023 to raise funds for the 'Your Trust' Charity'. #FUCancer #JFDI

Then travelling to St Michaels Church, Stoke Prior B60 4JT for his burial which will be followed by a celebration supper and drinks at the Navigation Inn, Hanbury Road Stoke Prior, B60 4LB

Mick's wish is that people attending should not wear black, thank you.

In place of flowers, Jackie has asked for donations towards my son Sean and brother Gez McGuinness, are running the Solihull Half marathon on behalf of Mick, to raise money for Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS. who gave Mick and his family such wonderful care and support. The Debbie Williams Ladies Merit Final

The Raven is the venue for the first of two Warwick & Worcester Merit Finals it will be hosting this month.

First up today whilst the men endeavour to qualify for their final later in the month, it is the Women's turn to battle it out to take top honours in the Warwick & Worcester Debbie Williams Ladies Individual Merit, to lift the trophy, gain a place in the BCGBA Ladies Merit Final and the Champion of Champions at the end of the season.

Fancy challenging yourself, there is still time. Although the entry portal for this competition has now closed, you can still enter by turning up this morning and registering. The cut off time if you wish to enter is 10.45 for an 11am start.

Please remember this is an Association Final so dress code does apply.

If you are at a loose end with no league bowling and you haven't entered then mens' event and want to watch some quality bowling, get yourself down to the Raven.

The draw and green selection for the qualifying rounds of the 116th Warwickshire & Worcestershire David Perry Individual Merit has now been drawn by your Cups & Merits Officer Colin Pollard and witnessed by Ashley Hickman of Moor Lane Bowling Club.

The county had 123 entries for this years event, good luck to each and every one of you.

Qualifying takes place on 8 greens on Saturday 3rd June from 2pm, with 4 players from each venue qualifying for our Finals day on Sunday 25th June at the Raven Bowling Club. Would all qualifiers please notify Colin of your success immediately after the games.

2023 Veterans Merit Winner

Congratulations to Ronnie Regan (Moseley CC)

Congratulations to "The President" Ronnie Regan of Moseley CC who beat Mark Street, the George 21-17 in the final of this years W&W Veterans Merit which was held at Boldmere St Michael on Thursday 18 May. This is the second time Ronnie has picked up this title, his first coming in 2014.

Mark made his way to the final with an opening round victory against W&W President Phil Ellett (Drakes Drum), winning 21-13. In the second round he beat Alan Cooke (Thimblemill) 21-15. In the quarter-finals Mark had a very touch match-up against Tony Eades (Bradford Arms). Mark made swift work of dispatching his opponent 21-10 to set up a semi-final against Dave Clarke (Tanworth in Arden). This game could have gone either way with the score staying close to the very end and Mark narrowly winning 21-19.

Ronnie's route to the final started with a bye in the first round. In the second round he met Tony Toal (Woodbourne) who he quickly swept past, winning 21-5. In the quarter's his opponent was Dave Jones (Ward End Social) a slightly tougher game which he won 21-13. The win set him up with a semi-final game against the day's elder statesman Ray Broadfield (The George). I think this was one game too many for Ray as Ronnie swept him away 21-8 to set up the final against Mark.

So to the final, and Ronnie, the most consistent bowler on the day got off to a great start with Mark constantly chasing him. This continued all the way through the final until Mark tried his hardest to pull the game level. One end was a massive two shot swing that put the game out of Marks reach and allowing Ronnie to win 21-17.

Both players now go forward to represent Warwick & Worcester in the BCGBA Jack and Jean Isherwood Championship at Prees in Shropshire on Wednesday 5th July. We wish both players the best of look in the Nationals.

Barry Maskell Jnr's funeral will take place on Friday May 19th at Robin Hood Cemetery at 11.00am leaving from his parents house at 10.30 am.

Seating in the crematorium will be for family first as we are expecting a large turnout, with family flowers only please.

The wake will be at Yardley Wood Social Club from 12.30pm with everyone welcome to come and celebrate Barry's life and raise a glass and share your memories of him

It's that time of year again. The BCGBA Endsleigh Men's Senior County Championship starts on 7th May, when Warwick & Worcester open their account against current Crosfield Cup holders, Yorkshire in what is probably a must win game in this year's competition.

The home-leg of the game is being played at The George, Warley from 2pm, whilst the away-leg is at Meltham Sports Complex No. 1 Green, Meltham, Holmfirth HD9 5QT (the venue Yorkshire used in 2021).

We'd love your support at both venue's. Let’s get The George full of home support to spur our lads on, but equally we’d love to get our coach to Huddersfield full to give our away team a fighting chance.

Queslett Bowling Club

It is with great sadness and regrets that I have to inform you of the death of Pete who died on Saturday 17 December 2022.

He was admitted to Walsall Manor Hospital on 2 December with lung and chest infections and his condition deteriorated over the following 2 weeks.

Pete has been a great friend and colleague to all who knew him and he will be missed terribly.

His funeral will take place at Streetly Crematorium, Sutton Coldfield at 10.45am on 11 January 2023. Family flowers only, please.

SHANNON KERNICK , was crowned the BCG Ladies 2022 Champion of Champions following her 21-17 final victory over the 2017 winner, Lynsey Gorman.

Played at the same Monk Sports & Social Club venue as the men, Shannon, winner of the Norden Open Singles, accounted for Jayne Kent (Cynthia Tonge Memorial) 21-16, Andrea Ainley (South Yorkshire) 21-15, her sister, Emily, who beat her in the semi-final of the Warwick & Worcester Merit, 21-12 and booked her place in the final at the expense of Lorraine Hirst (Enid Blackburn Trophy).

2022 Mixed Pairs Merit Winners

Champions defend title

Congratulations to Ryan Prosser and & Emily Kernick who successfully defended the W&W Mixed Pairs crown they won last year, in this year's final which was held at Woodbourne Sports on Sunday 28th August .

Eight pairs qualified for the finals and in their opening game, Ryan and Emily were drawn against 2021s losing finalists Ben Harris & Michelle Jones. In a tight game, the defending champs won 21-18.

In the semi-finals, they were drawn against Andy Saunders & Jess Bennett who they defeated to 13. This set up a final against Glen Herbert & Sarah Hall, their path to the final included a first-round win against Jason Galvin & Tracey Baker 21-6 and a narrow semi-final victory over Greg Smith & Rachel Bennett 21-20.

The final was a fairly comfortable affair for the defending champions who came out on top 21-5 to lift the trophy for the second year running.

Unfortunately, neither the champions or runners-up can represent Warwick & Worcester at the National finals at Owley Wood Recreation Club, Barrymore Road, Weaverham CW8 3LS on Saturday 1st October, commencing at 10 am.

The draw was done last night, Monday 15th August, by delegates from Derbyshire, North Midlands, Potteries & District, Staffordshire and Warwick & Worcester, along with the Secretary & Chairman of Pennfields Bowling Club.

2022 18-25 Merit Winner

Congratulations Ryan Walters (The Baldwin)

Congratulations to Ryan Walters (Baldwin) on winning the inaugural W&W 18-25 Individual Merit which was held at Ward End Social on Sunday 31st July.

Nine players turned out to compete in this newly formed merit, designed to give those that missed out on junior events over the past few years due to covid .

There was one preliminary round which was an all Boldmere St Michael affair between Owen Harrison & George Kearney, Owen came out on top 21-8. Ryan set to play the winner of this match in the next round. Which he duly won 21-11. Also in the quarter-finals, Cameron Cutler overcame Nathan Caines 21-20 in a very entertaining match, Tom Skelding got the better of Jack Newsome 21-15 and Shannon Kernick beat Josh Hale 21-14.

So to the semi-finals, Ryan versus Cameron and Tom versus Shannon. Ryan won his match 21-14, whilst Tom Skelding saw off Shannon 21-11, setting up for a great final.

In the final Ryan took a commanding lead over Tom and eventually ran out 21-10 to be the first player to lift this title.

This meant that Warwick & Worcester have 4-players going forward to the BCGBA 18-25 Merit Final, which is being played this Sunday, 14th August at Windle Bowling Club, Hard Lane, St Helens WA10 6JT. The four going forward are Ryan Walters, Tom Skelding, Cameron Cutler and because Shannon was unavailable on the date, next best qualifying position went to Nathan Caines.

Congratulations Nick Peters & James Seville

Congratulations to Nick Peters & James Seville on winning the W&W Mens Pairs Merit in a tight final against Ryan Prosser & Elliot McGuiness in the Final played at the Raven on Sunday 24th July.

After coming through a qualifying round on the Baldwin in June, Nick & James joined seven other qualifying pairs in our Local Final. In the First round they narrowly overcame Josh Hale & Glen Herbert 21-19, before beating Pete Davenport & Cameron Cutler 21-16 in the Semi-finals, propelling them to the final.

Their opponents in the final, Ryan & Elliot who qualified at Hamstead to reach the last eight, played in an all George opener, with Ryan & Elliot beating Russ Prosser & Rob Carter 21-16. In the semi's they played Jack & John Newsome, beating them to 8 and setting up the final match.

Ryan and Elliot led for much of the final, but Nick & James battled hard to come back and eventually win 21-20.

Coach to Yorkshire

Next Sunday, sees our Senior County Men in action against Yorkshire in the semi-finals of the Crosfield Cup. The home venue is at Ye Olde Knowle, which i'm sure will be well supported, but if you fancy a trip into the lion's den and a trip to Yorkshire to give our lads the best possible support, sign up to come on the coach, it's a great day out!!!!

Please note we have added a 3rd pick up to maximise the numbers on the coach ( and it only adds 18-20 mins to the overall journey so thanks for your patience)

3. 9.45am - M6 Village Hotel J10.

The driver then has the option of the toll road across to the A38 or M6/M42/M1.

It should take around 2 hours 15 mins from the last pick up point ( factoring in a 10 min stop). We will aim to be there for 12.15pm.

We already have about 12 spectators confirmed so please get you seats booked with me or Steve Darling ASAP.

A reminder that the coach has cost us £700 and it’s £10 per head and it would be great to fill the 48 seats, for what should be a great game and in particular a great spectacle for the spectators.

We will be out-numbered, but I’m sure we can hold our own verbally with a full coach !!

Warwick & Worcesters qualifying event takes place on Sunday 31st July at Ward End Social from 11am in the morning.

If you are eligible and would like to enter, you can do so through the Merit entry portal on our website, link below

The closing date for entry has been extended until Monday evening at 8pm to give players a chance to enter. We currently have 13 entries, it would be nice to build the numbers up to make a real competition of the event.

There is a small amount of prize-money available for this event and obviously the chance to play in a national final up for grabs.

As this is a County final, dress code will apply, collared shirts and black trousers/tailored shorts.

The 18 to 25 individual merit is a NEW competition instigated by BCGBA to give those younger players who missed out on bowling due to COVID the opportunity to play for a National title.

The National final takes place on Sunday 14th August at Windle Bowling Club, St Helens, Merseyside and Warwick & Worcester will be able to send 4-qualifiers forward to take part in this event.

Entry will be open to any BCGBA registered player, male or female, who has attained the age of 18 years but is under the age of 26 years on the 1st January in the year of the competition. All games will be 21 up with 3 on the card.

Players can only compete for one county. A player having been selected to play for a county in the County Championship cannot play in another county's competition

Midland Masters Entrants & Green selection

Here is the green draw for the regional qualifying rounds of this years Midlands Masters Merit, which takes place on Friday 22nd at 7pm. W&W Have 11-spaces in the Final of the Midland Masters which takes place on Sunday 11th September at Pennfields Bowling club in Wolverhampton.

This is not the draw. Draw to be done at green side from pairs in attendance prior to the 7pm start time. 4 or 3 qualifiers per green, ALL competitors should have between one or two games to qualify for the final. Ahead of expected record high temperatures across much of the country this weekend, we're issuing the following guidance for our bowls family.

The Met Office has extended an Red extreme heat warning as temperatures build later this week and into early next week for much of England.

The Red warning, which has been issued for Sunday (17 July) and Monday (18 July), highlights likely adverse health effects for the public – not just limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat.

Temperatures could be in excess of 35°C in the southeast, and more widely around 32°C within the warning area.

With the outdoor bowls season in full swing, we wished to provide guidance for players and officials ahead of the weekend. Whilst common sense should apply, we have prepared the below to further assist:

ALL BOWLS ACTIVITY

• Keep hydrated (water) and avoid dehydrating alcoholic and caffeinated drinks.
• Wherever possible, stay out of the sun. Try to avoid physical exertion at the hottest times of the day, and always remember to put on a hat and wear sunscreen.
• Consider rescheduling the time of matches to avoid the middle of the day between 11am-3pm and/or reducing the number of ends played (subject to mutual agreement of both parties.

Midland Masters - Local Qualifying

The Midland Master Merit was created in 1971 and is a competition held between Individuals from the counties of Derbyshire, North Midlands, Potteries & District, Shropshire, Staffordshire and ourselves at Warwick & Worcester.

This years final is being held at Pennfields Bowling Club in Wolverhampton on Sunday 11th September, with the eventual winner of the 64-player final receiving a place in this years Champion of Champions in October.

This is an open competition and therefore open to both Men and Ladies of any age.

Warwick & Worcester have 11-spaces in the National final and to this end are holding a QUALIFYING NIGHT to find those players on Friday 22nd July. Allocation of greens will be dependant on number of entries received for the event.

JUNIORS DO IT AGAIN

On an extremely hot and very sunny day in Manchester, Warwick & Worcester juniors took part in the finals of the Junior 6-a-side tournaments at Heaton Park and St Mary's Park in Greater Manchester.

Warwick & Worcester A, consisting of 6 of our more experienced juniors, played in the Main final at Heaton Park, whilst our B & C sides played in the consolation trophy held at St Mary's a few miles down the road.

With both tournaments starting at 10 and with neither venue having much shelter or protection, a long and hard day was expected.

The A side, were in a group of 4 at Heaton Park against North Lancs & Fylde 'A', Greater Manchester 'A' and arguably their toughest challenge Derbyshire 'A'. They started their account at 10am with a game against North Lancs. Playing up to 15 on the card, W&W won 72 to 64. At the same time Derbyshire beat Manchester 89-42. In the second game. In the second game W&W were drawn against Greater Manchester, who they dispatched 90-31, whilst Derby beat North Lancs 79-53. So to the final group game, a winner-takes all clash between ourselves and Derbyshire 'A'. Starting with 3 wins in the first 3 games, W&W went 20 shots up but were pegged back to a lead of 6 in games 4 and 5 until Jack Darling playing at 6 won his final game 15-9 meaning we beat Derby by 12 and progressed to the final where they would me the winners of the other group at Heaton, South Yorkshire.

Split over the two green venue, our first three players went on to green 2 (the one they hadn't played on) and all three got us off to the perfect start winning their games, Ciaran Andrews winning to 11, Ben Pritchard to 5 and Will Clarke also to 11. It was then over to our final 3 players to hold our lead and bring home the cup. Jamie Saunders started us off and fought to a valiant 9. Ryan Hocknull won to 10 and Jack Darling closed out the competition to 9, meaning W&W won that 6-1-side Championship 84-61. Well done Lads!

Competition over at Heaton Park, it was over to St Mary's Park to see how the B and C teams were getting on.

On what was a considerably faster playing surface than Heaton Park, the Greens at St Mary's would be a challenge to the most experienced bowlers.

Our C-team, compiled from some of our younger, least experienced, but most enthusiastic players, were playing in a group of four against Cheshire B, Lancashire and North Midlands B.

They opened their account with a game against Lancashire, and whilst having a couple of winners unfortunately lost 53-74. In their second game they were playing Cheshire B. Warwickshire C had 4 out of 6 winners, but again, just lost by 8 shot, 70-78. In their final group game, our C's played local rivals North Midlands B who were also too strong and won 82-40. Unfortunately that was the end of the C-teams participation for the day.

Both Sarah and myself, cannot express how proud we are of these youngsters on what was a very challenging day. I have to pay praise to Mikey Hall who won all three of his games today and also to Paige Hall who won two and lost 14-15 in her other.

The B-team, were playing in a group of five against North Mids A, Cheshire A, Greater Manchester A and North Lancs and Fylde B.

In their opening game, they played Greater Manchester B. Our B-side were too powerful for them and we had 6 winners, beating them 90-19. In the second game against a stronger Cheshire A, W&W had two winners and unfortunately lost 53-76. The third round was a bye round for our team, so they had to sit out for about an hour. In round Four we played local rivals again in North Mids A. In a very tight game it was decided by 4-shots where North Mids just edged us out 73-69.

Time was getting on now and the A-side had joined the party at St Mary's for the remainder of the match, but unfortunately the weather had taken its toll. For the fifth round Warwickshire B's were scheduled to play North Lancs & Fylde and Cheshire were to play Greater Manchester, but unfortunately both teams withdrew from the competition due to players suffering from both sun and heat stroke. This meant both teams were awarded walkovers and meant that Cheshire topped the group and progressed to the final against North Midlands B who had been waiting around for about an hour for the final. Cheshire won the final 78-53.

Sarah and myself would like to thank all the parents and supports, not just at this game but at the previous junior county games held in May and June for your support and help around the greens, Also to Jayne Bates who stepped in as a third team manager when we needed help. But most importantly to all the Juniors that played for Warwick & Worcester over the 3 events. Whether you are one of the newbies playing in your first competitive games or one of the three experienced players who unfortunately bow out of Junior County tournaments, Will Clarke, Jack Darling and Jamie Woodhouse, thank-you, thank-you, thank-you... You've done yourselves proud, but also been a credit to our association.

Kernicks win again, Congratulations!!

Congratulations to Shannon & Emily Kernick on winning the W&W Ladies Pairs Merit in a tight final against Sarah Hall & Emily Weaver at a hastily re-arranged Greville Arms on Sunday 3rd July.

The sisters crept home 21-20 in the final, after beating Paula Stevens & Karen Fee (Towers) 21-4 and Anne O'Loughlin & Kathryn Willets (Hall Green & Romsley) 21-18.

Sarah & Emily beat Jayne Bates & Joan Ingram (Boldmere St Michael) 21-8 and Michelle Meadowcroft & Wendy Bennett (Baldwin & Boldmere St Michael) 21-15 to reach the final.

Congratulations to Lee Kington (Greville Arms)

On Sunday 26th June, around 200 supporters watched 32 of our county's best bowlers competed to become Warwick & Worcester Men's Individual Merit Champion at the Royal Oak in Halesowen.

Congratulations to Lee Kington on winning the Merit Final 21-14 in a great game against his Greville Arms team mate Glen Herbert.

Both players battled through 4-rounds of competition to reach the finals. Glen in the top half of the draw had to play defending champion and another team-mate Ross Dunkley in the first round, winning 21-16. Lee opened his account with a 21-14 victory over the Drake Drums' Gary Smelt.

In the second round, again both players had tough draws with Glen seeing off Tom Palmer (KHP) 21-13 and Lee narrowly beating Elliot McGuinness (George) 21-18 .

On to the Quarter-finals, Glen beat Rob Carter (George) 21-8, setting up a semi-final against Tony Williams (Maggies) and Lee overcame Mike HIll (West Brom FSC) 21-10 and for Lee a semi-final game against Jak Locker (KHP).

All four players in the semi-finals had played well all day, with Tony overcoming Will Clarke, Matty Caines and Russell Prosser and Jak beating one of the favourites Ben Harris in the first round and then having victories against Mark Gamsby and Callum Mitchell to qualify.

In the semi's Glen defeated Tony Williams 21-14 and Lee was victorious against Jak 21-18, setting up the final for the two teammates. In a tense final Lee eventually saw off Glen winning 21-14. Congratulations to all who competed on the day.

Thank you to the Royal Oak and their landlady Claire for providing some excellent facilities and a fantastic surface to play on, to John Newsome for refereeing for best part of the day, and to Gary Smith for acting as compare for the day.

WARWICK & WORCESTER CLAIM LADIES JUNIOR TITLE

The 2022 BCG Ladies Junior County Team Championship was played on the greens at Heaton Park, Greater Manchester, with Warwick & Worcester claiming the title.

After some late withdrawals, just seven teams took part in this year’s championship with the Isle of Man and Warwick & Worcester both entering two teams.

The seven teams were divided into two groups, one of four teams and one of three teams. All games were 15up and the standard of bowling was superb throughout.

Warwick & Worcester ‘A’, playing on green 2, were drawn in the three-team group and after beating Isle of Man ‘B’ by 16 they just got the better of North Lancs & Fylde by 4 chalks to top the group and a secure their place in the final.

Yorkshire, playing on green 1, after a tough opener with Cheshire, winning by 6 chalks, were rarely troubled by the Isle of Man ‘A’ and Warwick & Worcester ‘B’ as they booked their place in the final.

The final was played on both greens starting on green 2 where Warwick & Worcester opened up an 8 chalk advantage at the halfway stage thanks in the main to Ciaran Andews’ 15-7 card. The Midlanders dominated the remaining three games on green 1 with Ryan Hocknull matching Ciaran’s 15-7 card as his side finished with 26 chalks to spare.

BCG Ladies President, Sheila Whitely, made the presentation of the Trophy to Warwick & Worcester and vouchers to both team s.

JUNIOR SIX-A-SIDE CHAMPIONS TO BE DECIDED

The May fixtures in the newly introduced BCGBA 2022 Junior Six-a-Side Championship were a great success with the juniors taking part and all enjoying the new format.

The competition now continues to Heaton Park and St Marys Park, Greater Manchester, on Sunday 10th July to decide the winners. Once all teams have confirmed their attendance the fixtures will be posted on the BCGBA website.

W&W Mixed Pairs Qualifying Night

Here is the draw for the qualifying round of this years Mixed Pairs Merit, which takes place on Friday 1st at 7pm. Due to the number of entries we have had to use 4-greens to ensure everyone must play at least one game to qualify for the finals, which take place on Sunday 28th August, where a qualifying 8 pairs will play off from a new time of 2pm to lift the title.

This is not the draw. Draw to be done at green side from pairs in attendance prior to the 7pm start time. 2-qualifiers per green, ALL competitors should have between one or two games to qualify for the final. Association Pairs Merits are coming thick and fast, and the Mixed Pairs is no exception. Qualifying for this years Warwick & Worcester Mixed Pairs Merit takes place on Friday 1st July from 7pm. The Venue or venues for qualifying will be announced shortly after the closing date which we have extended to 6pm on Sunday 26th June.

The W&W Men's Pairs Merit competition has returned for 2022 after a 2-year gap. This merit is an internal county competition only, there is no National finals to play for, just the kudos of being our local champions.

Qualifying will take place on 4-greens, where between 11 and 12-pairs will play down to 2 on each green to qualify for the W&W Men's Pairs Final, on Sunday 24th July where 8-pairs which will play off to be crowned Warwick & Worcester champions.

The 4-greens being used for the qualifying stage are Hamstead Social , Ward End Social , The Baldwin & M&B Portland Road . Venue for the final will be decided once final eight are known.

There is no dress code for the qualifying, but will apply on finals day.

2022 Junior Merit Winner

Congratulations to William Clarke (British Oak)

Congratulations to Will Clarke on winning the W&W Junior Merit Final 21-13 in a great game vs Jack Darling (Triplex) which was held on a very well maintained Greville Arms on Sunday 12th June.

Both players battled through 3-rounds of stern competition to reach the final, in what would be both players last season at this level. In the first round Jack played Madison Taylor of The Baldwin, winning to 5, although the score doesn't reflect some of the ends both players put in. Wills opponent in the first round was probably his toughest, where he overcame last years merit winner Ryan Hocknull of West Brom Supporters 21-19 .

In the second round, Jack had to battle against Ben Pritchard to progress, just doing so 21-18 in another match that could have gone either way, whilst Will had an easier game against relative newcomer Luke Bullock of The Beeches, winning 21-7.

This brought us to semi-finals stage and Jack played Lucas Robinshaw (Bradford Arms), it was neck and neck to around 10-across until Jack settled on a 3/4 corner mark and ran away with the game. In his semi-final Will dominated from the start against Ciaran Andrews (Deers Leap/West Brom FSC) settling on a short mark along the front edge which he played consistently well.

Will continued on this mark in the Final and took a lead that Jack could never pull back against. Congratulations to both players and to all the juniors that took part in this years competition.

Will and Jack now get the opportunity to represent W&W at the Junior All Britain which takes place at Royton Cricket, Bowling & Running Club, Bransdale Ave, Royton, Oldham OL2 5TX on Saturday 20th August.

Thanks to Sarah Hall for your help on the day and to Emrys, Roy and Darren from the Greville for getting the green in great condition and helping out with measures when called upon!

Two more merits are fast approaching, The W&W Junior Merit and the Men's Pairs Merit.

Junior Merit

Entry for the junior merit closes on Friday 10th June at 6pm . We will accept entries on the morning, but it is preferable to register the junior online so we have an indication of numbers. The entry fee is £3.50 and can be done through the online portal.

The merit is open to both male and female entrants who had not reached the age of 18 by 1st January 2022.

The Final is being held at The Greville Arms on Sunday 12th June. Sign in at 10.45 for a 11am start. We currently have 11 entries, it would be good to push that number up, so get your child entered.

The draw will be done on the day and juniors are reminded that this is an association final and dress code MUST be adhered to.

Men's Pairs Merit

Entry for the men's merit closing on Sunday 12th at 6pm . The entry fee is £11 per pair and must be done online.

Congratulations Paul Hemming - 100 Senior County Caps

Paul Hemming became one of only a handful of players to achieve 100 Senior County Caps for Warwickshire & Worcestershire.

David Perry, Life Member of WWCBA, Past President and former Chairman of County Selectors was invited by the WWCBA Management to give a speech at the end of the Cheshire v WWCBA County match on Sunday 5th June 2022.

Dave Perry gave a commanding speech as only Dave can give; his draft notes have been recorded below and believe it is correct to share with the bowling community.

Tribute to the players from both Cheshire and WWCBA and to the high levels of performance today have now been made by the respective senior officials, I am not seeking to usurp their roles however, I do wish to invite you all to recognise the achievements of a WWCBA senior county player who today has played his 100th senior county match. Please will you join me in congratulating Paul Hemming.

Paul today Joins five other senior WWCBA County bowlers each of whom holds 100 caps, they are Alan Powell, Paul Gambsy, Anthony Bracken, Steve Darling and Carl Fielding.

BCGBA senior county championships were first held in 1908 the winner won the “Crosfield Cup” as it was named at that time, since then the first war years prevented the championship taking place in eight years and then Covid came along, 106 annual championships have been completed since 1908 Cheshire our opponents today have won 20 championships since 1908 and WWCBA have won 11. During these 106 finals Cheshire and WWCBA have played against each other five times only at this championship level. Cheshire have previously won on three occasions 1939 1953 and 1955 and WWCBA I have won on two occasions 1964 and 2015.

There’s some background to note on behalf of WWCBA and I wish to comment on a few statistics attached to the county playing record of Paul Hemmings achievement during the last 25 years.

Paul’s first ever county game was played in May 1997 against Lancashire away Barr Lane Bolton (he lost 20-21) Since then he has played one or more county matches against every other BCGBA County including the Isle of Man.

We know what he has done leading up to today’s 100th match, he has played 47 away winning 20 losing 27 and played 34 home winning 24 losing 10, he has also played 18 supplementary county matches winning 10 and losing eight, That is a fantastic record.

Paul has been a member of a most successful county team in my chairmanship of the county selection committee ended two years ago having chaired the selection of 47 consecutive county teams during which 44 matches were won, Paul played in all 44.

Please now note an incredible statistic during his 25 years county involvement. Paul has represented WWCBA in eight Crossfield cup finals, he has never been in a losing team in all these eight finals.

Universally known as “Mr Angry” his nickname has journeyed with him to the Tally Ho BC. King George V BC, The Greville Arms BC and The George Warley and he’s now probably angry with me!

Paul has represented WWCBA with much energy, skill, enthusiasm, humour and has always demonstrated a willingness to help at any level.

Would you all please congratulate Paul on achieving this wonderful milestone.

Paul was presented with the WWCBA commemorative 100 cap badge, following his 21-12 win today against Craig McGuigan of Cheshire.

Why do we need Safeguarding in Bowls?

Responding to the disclosures by Sir Bradley Wiggins in April that he was abused by a coach when he was 13, NSPCC's head of child protection in sport Michelle North said Wiggins had shown "real bravery" in speaking up and added that his experience showed the need for sporting clubs and bodies at all levels to be subject to "robust" safeguarding.

Positions of Trust in Sport

The NSPCC’s Child Protection in Sport Unit is celebrating a victory, as the law related to abuses of positions of trust changes in June, to include coaches and others in positions of trust within sport. They have produced a briefing document Preventing abuse of positions of trust in sport | CPSU (thecpsu.org.uk) to support sports organisations to make appropriate changes to their codes of conduct and safeguarding information. The BDA will be developing guidance to help bowls clubs with this, so that the positive impact that those in positions of trust can have on young people can be maintained and strengthened.

Safeguarding Training & Education Resources

A new short, interactive, online safeguarding course will be available on the BDA website, under the ‘Clubs’ tab later in June. This will be suitable for any bowls club member to find out why safeguarding is relevant to them in their sport – remember ‘safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility’. It will support club Safeguarding Officers if they have little background in safeguarding. It will also be a useful introduction for coaches before they complete their safeguarding training via Coach Bowls.

Congratulations to Emily Kernick on winning the W&W ladies Individual Merit 21-15 in a great game vs Kirsty Darling at the Warwick & Worcester Ladies' Merit which was held at Ye Olde Knowle on Saturday 4th June.

Emily battled through 5 rounds of competition to lift the title. In the first round she beat Joan Garner 21-8, followed by a victory over last years runner-up, Emily Weaver 21-3. In her quarter-final match Emily beat Lorraine Clarke to 15. It was then a battle of the sisters in the semi's with Emily just beating last years winner, Shannon 21-19.

Kirsty's route was via a second round game against Jenny Walsh which she won to 14, and then a quarter-final against Michelle Meadowcroft. Kirsty came out on top 21-16. In her semi-final, she was up against Jayne Bates who she dispatched to 13, setting up the final.

Commiserations to Kirsty and also the two losing semi finalists of Shannon Kernick and Jayne Ann Bates .

Some great bowling all day and thanks to YOK on the use of their bottom green.

Ladies & Men's Merits closing 28th & 29th May respectively

There is no league bowls on June 4th as it is the Final of the W&W Ladies Individual Merit and qualifying day for the Men's Individual Merit. Challenge yourself and enter the merit to test your abilities against people you may never normally face, but you need to be quick as the closing date for the Ladies and Men's Individual Merits are fast approaching.

BCGBA Ladies Average Winners Classic Runner-up

Slightly belated, but on the 8th May, the BCGBA Ladies Average Winners Classic took place at Poynton Sports Club.

Congratulations to Anne O'Loughlan who was the event runner-up on the day.

"This was a fabulous day, which was well supported by players and spectators and the weather was certainly very kind to us.

Thank you to all the competitors, to get through to this competition is an achievement in itself.

There was some excellent bowling by all the competitors the losing semi-finalists were Claire Russell North Lancs & Fylde & Hayley Scott South Staffordshire. With Anne O’Loughlin Warwick & Worcester & Louise Ollerton Greater Manchester going on to play in the Final, the eventual winner being Louise Ollerton 21-16.

BCGBA Ladies Competitions Committee would like to thank Poynton Sports for their kind hospitality and hard work all day, in providing excellent refreshments. We have to say this was a great venue.

2022 Veterans Merit Winner

Congratulations to Mark Street (The George)

Congratulations to Mark "Giggsy" Street who beat Allan Hemming 21-5 in the final, in the first of our county Merit competitions, the W&W Veterans Merit which was held at the Deers Leap on Thursday 19 May.

After a full day of very competitive bowling, Mark came out on top with a convincing win over Allan in a great final that isn't reflected in the final score.

Allan made his way to the final with an opening round victory against last years champion Tony Freeth (Brookhill), winning 21-12. In the second round he beat Dave Kemp of Boldmere Sports 21-14. He then went on to play Tony Williams (Maggies) in the quarter finals, where he arguably played one of the shots of the tournament to squeeze tony out 21-19. In the semi-final Allan faced Paddy McGuinness (George) and took quite a firm lead, but paddy rallied and fought back to 16, seeing Allan through to the final and a step further than he achieved last year.

Marks route to the final, started with an opening round victory against Peter Dunbavin (Triplex) 21-8. His second round tie was against one of two ladies in the competition, Karen Kinchin (Moseley) who played tremendously, but just missed out 21-16. In the quarters Mark faced John Welham (Hamstead) who he defeated 21-14. In the Semi-final, Mark was drawn against veteran stalwart Ronnie Regan. This game swung in each players favour throughout, but with Ronnie lying 1 on for game, Mark pulled out a wonder shot to win the end and the match 21-20.

So to the final, and Mark took control from the beginning, playing long corner marks with incredible precision, and he was just too strong in the end for Allan who played well but couldn't quite match the accuracy of Mark .

Both players should go forward to the finals at Prees in Shropshire on Wednesday 20th July, but we are just waiting confirmation from BCGBA at this time.

Test yourself, enter one of our many merits this year

Could you emulate one of these illustrious Warwick & Worcester bowlers and pick up our local or even national merits titles in 2022.

Along with the 5 merit competitions we ran on a restricted basis last season, the Men's, Ladies, Juniors, Veterans & Mixed Pairs, we are returning this season with a further 4 merit competitions, including a brand new one introduced by the BCGBA for those players aged 18-25 who missed out on junior merit opportunities due to COVID as well as Mens, Ladies and Junior Pairs competitions.

Warwick & Worcester have also returned to the Midland Masters fold for 2022. We will have a qualifying night on Friday 22nd July, where 11 of our bowlers will qualify for the Final which is at Penn Fields Bowling Club, Wolverhampton on Sunday September 11th. The competition is open to both Men and women and this year the finals do not clash with the Ladies County events. Whilst there is no local prize money for this competition, your entry fee goes towards the National final and the winner of that will receive a place in the Champion of Champions.

3 of the merits have certain age criteria which must be met:

JUNIOR MERIT

Open to male and female players who have not reached the age of 18 as of 1st January 2022.

VETERANS MERIT

Open to male and female players who have reached the age of 60 before the date of the competition.

Please note there is a tight deadline for the Veterans merit this year, entries must be in by Monday 16th May. In line with the National final at Prees in Shropshire, this merit is also being held during the week on Thursday 19th May at The Deers Leap, Kingstanding.

NEW - 18-25 MERIT

Open to male and female players who were over the age of 18 before 1st January 2022 and under the age of 26 on the same date.

The W&W A & B cup competitions kick-off on Friday May 13th with a handful of preliminary games.

The A Cup consists of teams in the Premier Division to Division 3, whilst the B Cup is made up of teams from Divisions 4 to 8.

Focus on… Safeguarding Policies

The BDA has updated the Safeguarding in Bowls Policy – in fact one policy has become two. It is recommended to have separate policies for safeguarding children and adults at risk, as these two groups are covered by different laws and the procedures for dealing with disclosures of abuse by children and adults are slightly different. You should ensure your county association or club now references these two policies which are on the BDA website. They have been approved by all bowls NGBs.

Being a Safeguarding Officer

All bowls club members deserve to have someone identified within their club who they can talk to should they have concerns. Prospective members including parents considering membership for their children, will see a club as safe to join, if it has prioritised appointment of a safeguarding officer. The club safeguarding officer or welfare officer is a very important role.

The BDA strongly recommends that all clubs appoint a safeguarding officer. They should support them by identifying and funding training – check out the courses regularly run through Coach Bowls. They should be clearly identified on club noticeboards and websites with their contact details. (There is a BDA template you can use). Clubs should also ensure that safeguarding is covered in committee meetings so consider making the safeguarding officer a committee role if it isn’t already.

Safe and Fair Membership

Bowls clubs should be very inclusive, welcoming membership from all. A difficult issue faced by all sports clubs is how to deal with membership requests from people with criminal convictions. Equally challenging is ongoing membership of someone who is the subject of police investigations or who acquires a conviction while being a club member. Club committees can be particularly challenged where the conviction is related to sexual offences.

Clubs should seek guidance from their NGB safeguarding lead. They will bring the concern to the BDA Case Management Group.

BDA Safeguarding Guidelines & Templates

The BDA website contains useful guidelines and templates on safeguarding issues to support bowls clubs and organisations. These are all being revised and a few new ones have been created in response to requests.

A revised Code of Conduct is included, with a poster version and signature version available as well as the complete document with specific sections for staff/volunteers, coaches, players, under 18s, spectators/parents/carers.

NEW Club Health Checker – Online self-assessment tool

Introduction

The Bowls Development Alliance are proud to announce the development of a bespoke online self-assessment tool for the sport of bowls which we call the Club Health Checker. The Club Health Checker offers an entry point for clubs to access BDA support on behalf of their Governing Body.

The new tool will be available free of charge to any affiliated club and aims to help clubs get a better understanding of the financial health of the club, any development needs and to support growth in membership.

The Club Health Checker

The Club Health Checker is a free, online self-assessment tool that will identify the challenges faced by your bowls club and highlights areas for targeted growth.

Through the completion of a 30-minute questionnaire a customised report is created which offers resources and suggestions on how to improve the clubs’ areas of development. It is recommended that clubs use this resource at least once a year to help measure their baseline participation, growth, and impact. The Club Health Checker is available to all clubs affiliated to BDA partnership NGBs which include Bowls England, English Indoor Bowling Association, British Crown Green Bowling Association and English Short Mat Bowling Association.

The Club Health Checker is not a ‘Pass or Fail’ assessment but rather a tool to help committees assess the current condition of the club and identify areas for development. The report is as accurate as the information you input, and to ensure that the report reflects your club’s position, it is important to answer the assessment honestly.

We recommend that the Club Health Checker is completed as a committee due to the information required to complete the assessment. To ensure your club’s continued development and health, we also recommend using the Club Health Checker on an annual basis.

You can book a free face-to-face or online appointment with your nearest Club Development Officer to discuss your report and get some support and guidance in the creation of an action plan.

Who should be involved?

Do I have to complete it all at once?

No. You can save your progress at any time and share the assessment link between the committee, all without the need to create a username or password.

Who will see the data I submit?

No individual data that you submit to us about your club or individuals within your club will be shared with any third parties.

How long does the Club Health Checker take to generate a report?

The report is automatic and will be accessible to download immediately after you complete the assessment. You will also receive a copy of the report by email.

A score for six additional characteristics that contribute to a well-run club
A bespoke list of recommendations and actions you can take to improve your score.

How often can I complete the Club Health Checker?

You will be able to access the Club Health Checker tool at any time and we encourage you to use this tool at least once a year. As you work on the recommendations, we have given you, you can complete the questionnaire again to receive an updated report with your new score and the next set of actions.

What benefit will it bring to my club?

The Club Health Checker Self-Assessment tool offers the clubs an opportunity to understand their strengths and areas for development. By completing the process clubs and volunteers will also get direction on how to improve on their areas for development which links to resources, courses, and information. By carrying out the Club Health Checker on an annual basis clubs can continually check on their development supporting them to become more sustainable and proactive in their development with support and help.

2022 Fixtures Released

The W&W fixtures have now been released.

Good luck to all teams for this season.

Certain matches being played this season against KGV or Moseley in their respective leagues will be affected by the Commonwealth Games for an extended period of time around the end of July & start of August. We have tried to adjust fixtures to accommodate their request of playing away throughout this time however the knock on effect across the whole league was far too great so we have had to revert back to the normal pattern.

As such, certain games against KGV or Moseley during the closure period of the games will need to be rearranged, between the clubs involved. As this is an extraordinary circumstance, We have extended the period of time to play these matches from the normal 29 days to anytime during May, June, July or August. This provides ample opportunity to agree a time between clubs of when to play the match.

If clubs are still unable to find a time then the league will step in and set this for you.

Premier Division - 23rd July - KGV v Kings Heath Park

Division 1 - 23rd July - Moseley v Greyhound

Division 5 - 16th July - KGV B v Deers Leap

2022 Laws of the Game Forums

11/3/22 & 30/3/22, 7pm.

The WWCBA Referee Society have agreed to run some Laws of the Game forums to improve our knowledge of the Laws of the Game and to attract more people to become qualified referees. It is recommended by WWCBA that all Captains where WWCBA rules state they act as adjudicators in league games should attend at least one of these forums. The cost will be £10 which includes sitting the BCGBA Paper 1 exam.

Ye Olde Knowle have agreed to host the first two of our 2022 Laws of the Game Forums which have been arranged for Friday 11th March 7.00 pm and Wednesday 30th March 7.00 pm.

Fee per candidate £10 including the BCGRS Paper 1 Exam.

We already have 9 places confirmed and we can have up to 16 candidates per session.

Please do let me know the names, people can attend one or both sessions, exam dates will be arranged to suit.

If Clubs wishes to arrange other dates, then please do get in touch to make arrangements. We are flexible and can start with groups as small as 6 which usually covers many clubs team captains officials etc..

The Sessions will focus on:

Measuring.
Knowledge or the laws (in particular those laws known to be misinterpreted).
Guidance how to pass the Paper 1 of British Crown Green Referees Society Examination.
Question and Answer of candidates experiences in using the laws during game play.

What you will get in return:

Each Candidate will receive a certificate of attendance from the British Crown Green Referee’s Society (BCGRS) which recognises that you have studied the Laws of the Game.

It’s understood that people may only wish to attend the Forum and may not progress to the Referee exam though it is recommended that once you have studied and understood the laws you should for your own satisfaction sit the exam.

Referee Exam:

There are three parts to the Referee Exam two written papers are marked by the BCGRS and a report provided. Paper 1 is relatively easy with 25 1-point questions and takes around 20 minutes. The pass mark is high, passing the Paper 1 exam enables people to be assessed at a Practical Examination. Then a 2nd written paper which explores candidates’ knowledge a little deeper to be qualified as a BCGRS Referee enabling them to officiate at WWCBA & BCGBA or just club events. The cost of the Paper 1 exam is included in the forum payable by each candidate. WWCBA Management committee have agreed a small budget so WWCBA may pay the BCGRS Membership fee, provided there is commitment to support WWCBA in county matches and events. WWCBA will support all candidates and Referees and pay necessary Insurance.

Activities

Qualified Referees may be required to be active to Measure or Referee at WWCBA County Events such as County Championship Events:

Men’s Senior County 1st Sunday of the Month
Junior County 2nd Sunday of the Month
Women’s County 3rd Sunday if the Month
There are WWCBA Merits and Cups which require support at final stages.

In addition, Leagues who are affiliated to WWCBA may request the services of a Referee and Clubs who have BCGBA Approved Competition Certificates may also request the services of a Referee.

Where Duties are undertaken the host club is invited to provide a high level of support and hospitality to referees.

Refereeing can be a rewarding role, you get to engage with bowlers at a high level of ability, be able to educate others in the Laws and watch some excellent examples of crown green skills close up. The role of a Referee is a voluntary one however some out of pocket expenses are paid towards food travel etc. (A BCGRS Senior Referee currently receives £40 plus 45p/mile at National

Emergency funding for storm damaged facilities

Organisations affected by the recent storms can apply for up to £15,000 from our Storm Relief Fund.

Storm-damaged facilities could soon be back up and running thanks to our new Storm Relief Fund.

Organisations with facilities – such as clubhouses, courts and pitches – affected by the recent storms can now apply for grants of up to £15,000 after we added an emergency storm damage option to our Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Activity Fund.

Whilst the effects of the recent storms and the subsequent flood damage are still being assessed, we want to ensure community sports facilities aren’t forgotten and are ready to reopen as soon as possible.

What can funding be used for?

The money could be used to repair storm-damaged building and roofs, grass and artificial pitches, decontaminate flooded clubhouses, replace damaged electrical systems or clear blocked drains.

Other items needed may include the hire of skips, pressure hoses or tarpaulins to secure exposed buildings (for use only when safe to do so).

What won’t we fund?

Clubs should, in the first instance, contact their insurers to ensure none of the damage incurred is covered under their insurance policy.

The Storm Relief Fund won’t be able to fund the loss of income, barring stock etc., or the routine maintenance and repairs resulting from everyday wear and tear.

Any works covered by your insurance policy would also be ineligible for funding.

Who can apply?

Your organisation can apply if you’re responsible for the facility and:

a not-for-profit voluntary group or sports organisation
a not-for-profit community club or organisation
a registered charity
a not-for-profit company
a community interest company (CIC) with three directors or other social enterprise
a leisure operator, operating a single site
a public body such as a local authority, parish or town council, education establishment (you will need to provide £:£ matched funding).

How do I apply?

If you need £15,000 or less, please use our Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Activity Fund application form and use ‘Storm 22’ as the project title.

If you need more than £15,000, please call us to discuss it on 03458 508 508 or email funding@sportengland.org .

Additional Information

To support your application, we’ll need you to submit a photo of your storm-damaged facility, which can be uploaded as part of your application.

If you would prefer to send this by email, please send it to funding@sportengland.org quoting the Unique Reference Number of your application.

Within the application, please tell us the date the damage occurred.

Junior Players Needed!

Your time to shine

Warwick & Worcester are looking to enter a Junior County side this season, but we need your help to discover any untapped talent from our younger bowling members. We are currently undertaking a study to see at what level we can enter a Junior County team for the 2022 season. The county season will either consist of around 4 matches played on the 3 ^rd Sunday of the month (either home or away) or taking part in 2 or 3 one day competitions with smaller teams at a single location.

Due to covid, we have lost a significant number of our more experienced bowlers, who have passed the required age limit. It’s now time for some of our younger bowlers to come to the fore and show what they can do.

We are looking for any juniors, either male or female, who were NOT 18 before 1 ^st of January this year to contact us if they would like to be considered to play. All standards and abilities will be considered.

The search is open to any club who are primarily affiliated to Warwick & Worcester and players need not necessarily play in the Warwick & Worcester County League or New Birmingham League but might play in one of our affiliated mid-week leagues, such as the Sutton Benevolent, Yardley Wood Super League, Erdington Midweek or any other league that primarily affiliates to us.

If you are already established in the junior county side from previous years, or if you’re relatively new to the game we’d like to hear from you. All abilities will be considered.

Once we have an idea of numbers, we will be organising several open days pre-season where we will invite you to come along and have some games against fellow juniors.

The WWCBA management proposal to reduce teams numbers from 12 to 10 players in the Warwick and Worcester County League (WWCL) was adopted by ballot with the result being 53 votes FOR & 14 votes AGAINST.

The management committee also inaugurated the Warwick and Worcester Birmingham League (WWBL). They confirmed that there would 8 members in a team and fixtures would start at 12.00 pm on Saturday.

Please note that clubs should register your players and teams not later than the 13 March 2022.

Appropriate forms will be sent out shortly.

NEW £5 Million Fund

Sport England have launched a new £5 million fund to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, that aims to use sport and physical activity to bring communities together and tackle inequalities.

Using money from the National Lottery, the fund will make awards of between £300 and £10,000 to community organisations in support of new projects providing opportunities to become more physically active. The funds could be used for things such as facility hire and coaching costs, or even small capital improvements.

The fund is open for applications now and will be make awards to not-for-profit organisations helping inactive people to get active, or less active people to become more active.

We particularly want to hear from projects working with people living in areas of disadvantage, as defined by the Indices of Multiple Deprivation areas 1-3.

We also recognise the pandemic may still be affecting the delivery of projects, either in how they’re delivered or how much they cost to deliver.

Therefore, applicants should make sure to consider any such additional cost or delivery changes to ensure you can achieve their aims.

We need 2,022 Batonbearers, each with inspiring stories, to take on the special experience of carrying the Queen’s Baton through England in summer 2022.

We’re looking for individuals from England that meet one or more of the following criteria:

Always willing to take on a challenge and has a unique and inspiring story;
Has made a meaningful contribution to sport, education, the arts, culture, or charity;
Is a figure of inspiration that positively challenges others to achieve their best;
Has taken on a challenge or cause and made a positive impact within their community.

The Queen’s Baton Relay will travel to every region in England, before arriving at the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on 28 July 2022.

EGM

Your club secretaries/delegates have been invited to an EGM to be held on the above date and time.

This EGM is to discuss proposals affecting the 2022 league season, which resulted from an extensive survey of clubs that was reported on at the AGM in January.

In short, the WWCBA Management Committee propose to alter the number of players in a team competing in the Warwick & Worcester County League (WWCL) from 12 to 10 and the consequential changes to the existing rules.

We will also inaugurate the Warwick & Worcester Birmingham League (WWBL) which will commence play at 12.00pm and consist of teams of 8 players. Please see attachment WWBL Final Communication and WWBL rules for more details.

We will also take this opportunity to ratify The WWCBA Association Bye Laws.

All relevant paperwork in regards to this meeting have been despatched to the club secretaries or delegates.

There is a £20 fine for any club not represented.

We trust that all club representatives will attend this historically vital meeting.

New WWCBA President

Congratulations to Phil Ellett, who has become Warwick & Worcester President for the next two years.

Phil was elected into office at the AGM held at The Tally Ho! on 26th January 2022, where he took over from outgoing President, Darren Andrews.

Phil has previously been your Deputy President for two years and has also worked hard as the Associations Development Officer and delegate to the BCGBA during which time he has contributed vigorously, competently and selflessly on safeguarding, coaching, refereeing and disciplinary matters. He has contributed a massive commitment to the game of bowls that we all love.

Phil is joined in High Office by his new Deputy President, Chris Price. Chris is also someone who has worked tirelessly for the Association over a number of years in his roles as Treasurer, Secretary and Registrar to the BCGBA.

Congratulations to you both.

Broomfield Folds

It's a very sad day today in that after an EGM at Broomfield on Sunday morning, the club has now officially folded due to not having the numbers to fulfil teams.

We would just like to wish the members all the very best moving forward in whatever paths they decide to take.

The bowling world has just got a little bit smaller and will just not be the same without seeing Broomfields name in the fixtures.

Phil Brown - RIP

It is with deep sadness we have to inform our members, that our friend and colleague from North Midlands, Phil Brown passed away in the early hours of Monday 18th October.

Phil had a battle with health and chose to stop the treatment that was just keeping his body alive without any quality of life. He passed away peacefully with his family at his bedside.

In his prime a top bowler and passionate about improving the game of bowls he loved.

He enjoyed the success as President of North Midlands County winning the Crosfield Cup while he was also President of BCBGA.

Phil also played in top leagues of WWCBA and provided as much support for them, attracting players to play for his North Midlands Club & County. along with working for The Federation, Midlands Alliance & Summit League.

A positive force that will be sadly missed.

In Memoriam

To who it may concern

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that Trevor Smith one the British Oak's long standing and well-respected members has recently passed away.

Trevor joined the club well over 30 years ago and during this time was a great club ambassador, former chairman and fundraiser whose infectious sense of humour endeared him to not just to our club membership but to the wider bowling community across the West Midlands and beyond.

The funeral will take place on Thursday 14th October 3.15 pm at Lodge Hill then back to Stirchley United for a celebration of Trevor's life - family flowers only - donations to St Mary's Hospice.

What a game of bowls and fitting for the final of the Mel Evans centenary mixed pairs. The final saw the same pairings as our local final go toe-to-toe in the National Event.

Emily Kernick and Ryan Prosser won 21-20 vs Ben Harris and Michelle Jones.

Charlie Pritchard

In Memoriam

To who it may concern

It is with great sadness that British Oak Bowling Club would like to announce that one of clubs most respected members Charlie Pritchard passed away earlier this month.

Charlie's contribution to the game of bowls and his remarkably good sense of humour will be sadly missed by the Oak and we are sure that all the people who knew Charlie from his previous clubs will join the Oak in mourning the passing of one of games true gentlemen.

Please note that for anyone who would like to pay their respects Charlie's funeral will be held at Robin Hood Crematorium on Monday 4th October -11.00 am - followed by a wake at The Loyal Caledonian Corks Social Club in Kings Heath.

RIP Charlie.

W&W Mixed Pairs Winners

Congratulations, Ryan Prosser & Emily Kernick

Congratulations to Ryan Prosser and Emily Kernick, who successfully defended their Warwick & Worcester Mixed Pairs title when they beat Ben Harris and Michelle Jones in the final at The British Oak.

After a day of great bowling the pair came out on top 21-11.

Mixed Pairs Merit

W&W have decided to add another merit to this years calendar of bowls, to give our bowlers the opportunity to challenge yourselves.

We are going to be running the Mixed Pairs Merit at the end of the month. Depending on entries we will be holding a qualifying event on Sunday 29th August, 2pm (if required), with the Finals Day or main event taking place on Saturday 11th September from 2pm.

Venues for both qualifying and the local final will be made after the number of entries has been confirmed. Closing date for entries is Monday 23rd August at 7pm.

Again you can enter online by visiting our Merit entry portal at https://www.wwcba.com/merit-entry-portal . The entry fee for this years event will be £10 per pair, and open to a mixed pairing of any age.

The BCGBA are also running the Centenary Mixed Pairs national merit on Saturday 2nd October at a location to be confirmed in Derbyshire, again we don't know how many entries we will have for this event until later in the season.

An all Warwick & Worcester final at the BCGBA Senior Merit Trophy!

Once again, congratulations to Ross Dunkley who took the next step after lifting our County Title a few weeks earlier, by Lifting the BCGBA Men's Senior Merit Trophy at Heaton Park in Manchester.

But it wasn't just Ross who showed the depth in numbers that Warwick & Worcester have, Jason Galvin repeated his feat and the Drakes Drum and joined Ross in an all W&W clash to lift the title.

LADIES MERIT

Congratulations to Shannon Kernick, who lifted the title, Warwick & Worcester Ladies Merit Champion for 2021.

The competition, which was held at the Bradford Arms saw a great day of bowling culminating in Shannon beating Emily Weaver in the final.

The two players route to the final were as follows:

Prelim Round, Shannon beat Anne O'Loughlin 21-12
First Round, Shannon beat Maureen Gamble 21-11, whilst Emily beat Lorraine Clarke 21-5

Quarter Finals, Shannon played Abby Easthope, winning 21-12, whilst Emily beat Emma Goode 21-12
Semi-Finals and Shannon beat Steph Witherspoon 21-11, and Emily beat Maggie Pailing 21-20

And in the final, Shannon ran out the winner 21-7

Unfortunately Shannon can not take part in the BCGBA National Merit Final, at Heaton Park, Prestwich, Manchester on Sunday, 15th August, but W&W have 4-spaces in the event so Emily, Steph Witherspoon, Maggie Pailing and Jan Pratley will represent the county.

VETERANS MERIT

The delayed semi-finals and final of the Vet's merit were concluded at Broomfield, whilst the Juniors played their merit on M&B. Congratulations to Tony Freeth, who became Warwick & Worcester Veterans Merit Champion for 2021.

The competition, which was held on the Broomfield concluded with Tony Freeth beating Tony Eades 21-12. This is the second competition in a row where Tony Eades has come runner-up.

The route to the final were as follows:

First Round, Tony Freeth beat Bob Smith 21-8, and Tony Eades narrowly beat Frank Benton 21-20
Second Round, Tony F defeated Stephen Green 21-8 and Tony E beat Jan Pratley 21-15

Quarter Finals, Tony F played Frank Naven, winning 21-14, whilst Tony E beat Mick McGuinness 21-17
In the delayed, re-arranged Semi-Finals Freethy beat Alan Hemming 21-16, and Tony E beat Ronnie Regan 21-14

In the final, Tony Freeth won 21-12

The two tony's are now going on to represent W&W at the national Jack & Jean Isherwood Veterans Merit at Prees in Shropshire on Wednesday 11th August.

JUNIOR MERIT

Congratulations to Ross Dunkley, who lifted the title, Warwick & Worcester David Perry Men's Individual Merit Champion for 2021.

The competition, which was held at the Drakes Drum saw a great day of bowling culminating in Ross beating Jason Galvin in a hard-fought final 21-18.

The two players route to the final were as follows:

First Round, Ross Dunkley beat Darren Andrews 21-11, whilst Jason Galvin beat Adam Kirby 21-15

Second Round, Ross played Tony Freeth, winning 21-7, whilst Jason beat Callum Mitchell 21-6
Quarter Finals and Ross despatches Greg Smith 21-19 in a tight game, and Jason beat Matthew Price 21-7

Semi-Finals saw Ross beat Elliot McGuinness 21-12 and Jason defeated Ben Harris 21-6

Time is running out

Time is running out to enter this years W&W David Perry Men's Individual Merit, sponsored by Jays Vapour Trail.

You have until 12 noon next Saturday, 5th June to place your entry for the qualifying round, which takes place on Saturday 12th June on various greens around the county, starting at 2pm.

Qualifiers on the day will then play in a 32-man Final for the honour of being Warwick & Worcester's Men's Merit Champion at The Drakes Drum on Sunday 27th June, from 11am.

The winner and runner-up of the Merit final will then have the opportunity to test their skills against the countries greatest at the BCGBA Mens Senior Merit, which this year is being held at Heaton Park in Manchester on Saturday 24th July.

W&W Merits 2021

Merit Entry Details for 2021

With the start of this year’s Covid hit reduced season about to start next weekend, W&W are now in a position to offer you some further opportunities to bowl this season.

We are going to be running 4 of our merit competitions this season, to give you the opportunity, to test yourself against new opponents on neutral greens. The four competitions we are going to run this season are the Junior, Ladies, Men’s and Veterans Individual Merits, giving all age groups the chance to win a prestigious competition.

The winner, runner-up and possibility of 4 further entrants (dependant on a draw) can then go on to represent W&W in the BCGBA National finals, which will be run on a 32-player competition later in the season.

JUNIOR MERIT

This is a one-day competition that this year will be held on the Colebrook on Sunday 11th July, starting at 11am.

It is open to both MALE and FEMALE bowlers who shall not have reached the age of 18 years on the 1st January 2021.

As it is a Merit Final, dress code will apply, Black trousers, collared shirts.

The fee for entry into this year’s Junior Merit is £3 .

Unlike the other merits, entries can be taken on the day, but we would ask where possible to register in advance (so we can ascertain entry numbers) on our website at

As usual, this will be held over two days with a qualifying round on Saturday 12th Jun e at various greens around the county (14:00 start) and a Finals Day, that this year will be held on the Drakes Drum on Sunday 27th June , starting at 11am.

There is no dress code for qualifying day, but at the Merit Final, dress code will apply, Black trousers, collared shirts.

If you have plans to play for another county in this year’s reformatted Men’s county championships, unfortunately you cannot take part in the W&W merit.

The fee for entry into this year’s Men’s Merit is £5 .

As it is a Merit Final, dress code will apply, Black trousers, collared shirts. All games will be played to 21 with 3 on the card.

The fee for entry into this year’s Veteran Merit is £4 .

Return to Play - Step 3

Attached are the latest guidelines regarding returning to play which were issued on 12th May by the BCGBA and provide information regarding the state of bowls from Monday 17th May.

Also attached is Bowls England's 10-page guide which is more comprehensive and for your information.

Government pages have yet to catch up as usually done on the day of implementation.

Key points. -

All restrictions on formats and numbers for organised activity under the
jurisdiction of British Crown Green Bowling Association will be removed.
Car sharing will be permitted.
Indoor hospitality can resume.
Spectators can return.

In accordance with its roadmap, the government has now announced its plans to move to Step 3 from Monday 17 May, and in line with the government’s announcement we are delighted to confirm the following:

Car sharing, spectators and indoor hospitality will be permitted This latest announcement is a great step forward for our sport, as we expect the majority of clubs to be able to operate in a fairly normal manner from Monday 17 May.

We recognise that the restrictions on car sharing and spectators in particular have presented challenges for some clubs and players and, like other sports, made representation to government on behalf of our affiliated clubs. We are therefore delighted that these will be permitted from Monday 17 May.

Please find attached the return to play guidance as it stands today, this has been produced in conjunction with Bowls England to try and ensure that we are issuing similar guidelines for outdoor bowls with specifics for each code as appropriate.

Key points. -

To play under the sport exemption (organised sport) clubs, league ands associations need to be members of the Governing body.

Accepted formats are listed on pages 3 and 4

No Spectators are permitted at present.

Travel you need to follow national guidance, still listed as minimise time spent outside (rule of 6 and 2 households)

All previous hygiene guidance remains in place.

Clubrooms can be open for use of toilets and collecting of equipment only in Step 1.

A revised risk assessment is attached , existing risk assessments should be reviewed and updated in line with the road map.

Visiting teams should be made aware of any restrictions at your club.

Warwick & Worcester Season 2021

2021 Season

Thank you to all clubs who have sent feedback in regarding bowling this season and what you believe is possible for your club. This is extremely useful in deciding what we should do this year when providing a bowling programme in these uncertain times. We would all like to see bowls go back to ‘normal’ this year just like the rest of society however we still have restrictions imposed on us until June 21 ^st at the earliest and unfortunately this influences what we can do this season. There are also clubs who still have difficulty accessing their greens with facilities on site not being available until May 17 ^th along with concerns regarding memberships for 2021 with players choosing to isolate until both vaccines have been received.

The most important part for us was to provide an organised programme of bowls this year, analysing every scenario to see which would provide the best opportunity for every club to take part following your feedback. I have summarised what we intend to do for the 2021 season below:

8 players per team
Clubs can enter 2 teams (A&B)
8 teams per division
Start Date will be the earliest possible of either 22 May, 29 May or 5 June
1 player can double up in A teams
2 players can double up in B teams
No fines etc for teams short of players but please do offer all opponents the maximum opportunity to play
Divisions will be constructed based on positions at end of 2019 season
League points system (point per player etc) will be the scoring system used
2021 season will have NO impact with regards promotion & relegation and will be a ‘one off!’
2022 season will start as ‘normal’ and divisional position will be reset based on finishing positions of 2019
Reduction of fees for 2021 to £20 per team entered & £3 per registered player includes Personal Accident Insurance
We are hopeful of running some if not all the local merit competitions this year – further information to follow as soon as possible following response to this note

At this stage, we cannot confirm the programme dates as this will depend on what the BCGBA have planned for this year. When we receive confirmation from the BCGBA with regards what events they are running and when, together with any additional guidance based on the Government and DCMS we will be able to confirm our calendar for 2021 and send this out. Not expected to be received before 13 ^th March.

We understand that what we have provided may not suit everyone this year and there is no penalty for clubs that do not want to be involved. When we restart in 2022 those clubs will be included as usual.

The new Birmingham League that was due to start in 2021 will now be put on hold until 2022. Details concerning the league will be communicated to you towards the end of the year.

Based on the above information, we now need to have a firm response with regards your participation this season from EVERY club. Can you indicate whether you will be entering ZERO, ONE or TWO teams by SUNDAY 4 ^th APRIL. We are aware that most greens will not be open until 29 ^th March and so this gives clubs the opportunity to get together and discuss what you want to do this season.

Back to Bowls Survey

The back to bowls survey was created to understand the appetite of the existing outdoor membership to return to club once lockdown restrictions lift.

As a partnership it is important to identify any concerns and potential interventions needed to support the membership to feel safe when returning to their clubs.

The survey was published on 8th January 2021 and shared through the BDA and its partners, Bowls England, British Crown Green Bowling Association and Disability Bowls England. It was promoted across key stakeholder websites, social media platforms and through county and local links such as the County Associations.

As of Monday 25th January 2021 , we received over 11,600 responses to the survey and although it remains open and continues to be promoted, we are happy that this provides a significant snapshot of bowls members. Through this data we can gain an initial understanding of the appetite to return, the mindset of the members but also what they expect to see from clubs on their return.

This insight will allow us to support clubs with appropriate resources and advice on what the membership are expecting in terms of health and safety, programme of activity and communications.

In Memoriam

To who it may concern

Would you please pass on to your members the sad news that Mick Johnson passed away yesterday a victim of covid-19.

Mick was well known for his passionate and forthright opinions about anything bowls, with a lifetime's service on and off the green.

At county level he was a past committee member, past President of the WWCBA and county team manager. At club level Mick was a founder member of The White Lion bowling club which mutated into the New Inns BC in about 1970.

Mick was vice President of New Inns BC and for many years served on committee and captained both the first and alliance teams. 'Pancho' was one of bowls great characters, never afraid to say what he thought in meetings and a force to be reckoned with on the green and off it, well known for his particular style of encouragement.

We will sorely miss his experience, advice and knowledge of bowls and will be the sadder for the loss of his sense of humour and infectious laugh.

Proposed New League

Hi All,

Please circulate this message to all your contacts so we receive feedback from as many players and officials as possible

Myself and the W&W committee have conducted a review of the current Business Houses league and have proposed several changes to assist clubs in putting teams out and hopefully growing the game further. Understandably, after a year of not playing bowls I am sure we are all concerned as to what we come back to in 2021 and hopefully this will provide an alternative option for clubs if they so wish to explore it.

The Business Houses league has been played under the W&W association for many years and we are looking to rename it the Warwick & Worcester Birmingham league going forward so that it is more recognisable to the area it is played. Games will continue to be played on a Saturday but we are looking at a new start time of 11:30am. This would avoid clashes with the main league that starts at 3.00 pm as well as other sporting events outside of bowls. Please bear in mind this is just a proposal and I would welcome feedback from clubs.

The other main change would be to reduce the playing numbers to 8 a side from the current 10 a side. This would give teams a greater chance of putting a side out as during 2019 there were several matches called off due to player availability. There would also be an unlimited number of players being able to double up and play in the main leagues team (if applicable).

Scoring would remain the same (1 point per player win etc) and clubs would not need to have a team in the main league to enter into the Birmingham league.

Depending on the number of teams in the league, a separate cup competition would be set up.

All these proposals have been discussed with the current Business Houses teams already. We are now looking for further feedback from the broader membership so that decisions can be made ahead of the 2021 season so please send any comments to myself at fixture.secretary@wwcba.com if possible before December 14 ^th .

Tier Level Guidance update from Sports England

We've worked with the government to help answer some of the key questions people in the sport and physical activity sector will have as it eases some of its lockdown restrictions.

Current guidance

Every part of England is now in one of three Covid-19 alert levels: Tier 1 (medium), Tier 2 (high) and Tier 3 (very high). Here’s a summary of what this mean for sport and physical activity:

Tier 1 (medium)

National restrictions, introduced from 24 September, continue to apply.

Indoors

Organised individual and team sports that have been through return to play protocols can continue, while adhering to the 'rule of six', which means playing in a group of no more than six people.

There are exemptions to this: under-18s, disabled people and, if for educational purposes, over-18s, can play in any number.

Other indoor activity, such as exercise classes, can continue in larger numbers based on the size of the venue, provided that people are in separate groups of up to six people and socially distance, or larger groups if they’re from the same household or support bubble, which do not mix.

Gyms and leisure facilities can stay open, and the ‘rule of six’ applies to informal activity.

Outdoors

National governing body-approved organised team sport, exercise classes and outdoor licensed physical activity and sport participation events can happen in any number provided they're in line with Covid-secure guidance.

The ‘rule of six’ applies to informal sport.

Tier 2 (high)

Indoors

Organised individual and team sport must be played by a single household or support bubble.

Exemptions laid out in Tier 1 on specific groups of people who can play in larger numbers continue to apply.

Exercise classes can also continue as per the rules under Tier 1, while informal sport can only be played indoors by a single household or support bubble.

Gyms and leisure facilities can stay open.

Outdoors

There's no change to the guidance for outdoor sport and physical activity – the Tier 1 rules still apply.

Tier 3 (very high)

Guidance under this tier is subject to change, depending on local and national government agreements.

Indoors

Sport and physical activity can be played as per the guidance under Tier 2.

Gyms and leisure facilities may have to close depending on local approaches to business closures.

Outdoors

Sport and physical activity can be played as per the guidance under Tier 1.

We’ll continue to update this infomration as the government issues more details.

Sports England Return to Play Fund

The £16.5 million fund is split into three strands and brings our total support for the sport and physical activity sector to more than £220m.

We’ve launched a new £16.5 million fund to give additional help to the sport and physical activity sector during the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

The Return to Play Fund will support groups, clubs and organisations who’ve been impacted by restrictions brought in to tackle the disease, and is part of our overall response to the crisis that now includes more than £220m of government and National Lottery funding.

Our chief executive, Tim Hollingsworth, said the fund would particularly focus on tackling inequalities in activity that have worsened over the last six months.

“A key priority for us has been to support our sector and all those who deliver sport and activity,” he added. “The disruption we've all experienced over the past few months has been unprecedented, with the ability to be active being just one way we’ve been affected, particularly at a time when keeping active and healthy has never been more important.

“With ever changing restrictions and measures being put in place throughout England, there is a continuing urgent need for us to try and support grassroots organisations to put in place the necessary support to safely get everyone active in local areas over the coming months.”

The fund, which will welcome applications from today, is made up of three parts

£10m - Return to Play:

Small Grants

This will provide grants of between £300 and £10,000 to help sport and activity groups, clubs and organisations respond to the immediate challenges of returning to play in a Covid-19-safe environment.

It’ll help community sport respond to the challenges posed, such as having to deliver in smaller groups, having the correct hygiene and safety equipment and giving training to club volunteers.

It’ll also cover making necessary changes to facilities, supplying additional sports equipment and new signage to meet current government and national governing body rules and guidance.

£5m - Return to Play: Community Asset Fund

This will provide grants ranging in value from £10,001 to £50,000. It’ll help local sports clubs and organisations to adapt and open important places and spaces that can help them welcome back their local community safely.

This will include helping groups, clubs and organisations address the challenges they’re facing by:

adapting how they use space and improving ventilation
converting existing space to meet social distancing requirements, such as additional changing space
making improvements to buildings or open spaces for temporary use to get more people active by using a vacant warehouse, shop or community centre.

£1.5m - Return to Play:
Active Together

This crowdfunding initiative will help sports clubs and organisations set up their own campaigns to help sustain them through the crisis.

It's a great alternative if they don’t meet the priority groups of the other parts of the Return to Play package, and we'll match crowd funds of up to £10,000 to help cover the loss of income.

The partnership with Crowdfunder will also include advice, guidance and training to help create successful campaigns.

The Return to Play Fund will especially seek to support those groups and organisations working with audiences we’ve identified as finding it more difficult to be active at this time.

These include:

Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities
people on lower incomes
those disproportionately affected financially as a result of the crisis
disabled people and people with long-term health conditions
those who are experiencing a greater burden of care responsibilities since the pandemic began.

Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston said the new funding would make a big difference as winter approached.

“Local clubs offer so much to their communities and it’s hugely important that we support them to keep people fit and healthy as we head into winter,” he explained.

“This welcome funding will enable people across the country to enjoy sport safely, boosting their mental and physical health in the months ahead.”

Boldmere St. Michaels will shortly be running a Junior Floodlight Tournament.

This is for Under 18's (as at 4 September 2020). To take place over two Qualifying Nights on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th September, with the final on Sunday 6th September.

We are looking for 12 players on each of the two qualifying nights playing down to 4 on a Round Robin basis (2 games guaranteed).

Finals night of 8 on a straight knockout basis.

Qualifying Nights 6.30 start (practice from 6), Finals Night 6pm start, practice from 5.30.

Entrance just £3, pay on night. Players from same club to be kept apart in qualifying unless more than 4 on same night.

It is with sad regrets that I have to tell you that Noel Brennan, Hall Green B.C. & formerly of Solihull Marsh Lane, and the Yew Tree Bowling Club, passed away peacefully on Monday 24th August 2020 at the age of 86 years.

BCGBA STATEMENT - PHASE 3 RETURN TO SPORT

We have received the following communication from the CEO of BCGBA updating the advice and rules for the playing bowls this season.

However, please note that the WWCBA as previously stated will not be arranging or overseeing any competitive league, cup of friendly bowls matches. You therefore do not require our permission to hold private competitions, friendlies, club events etc.

We urged you to think carefully about staging open competitive events (referred to in the attached note phase 3) as they will be difficult to manage under the existing Covid-19 rules and will be your own responsibility.

If you are organising events for your clubs we wish you well but remember that WWCBA are not involved. You must follow the Government and BGGBA guidelines for your own safety and for those who are taking part.

Message from CEO

Following our submission to Department of Sport the following is now permitted as long as all Social distancing rules and bubble rules are followed.

We have had to clarify the compliance with maximum of 30 and bubble size of 6. I have also had to clarify that our team games are a series of individual games.

Inter club friendlies up to a maximum of 12 singles games (maximum of 30 in the gathering)
This would also allow 6 doubles games etc.
League matches following social distancing as above.

Open Competitions / competitions

To comply with the social distancing the maximum rounds that could be played on a single days is 4, this would mean a total of 6 in the bubble assuming all other social distancing is maintained. In practice this would allow up to 16 (groups of) playing down to 4 with a finals day on a later day. (Singles)

To run an open competition the dates would need to be agreed in the normal way with the county secretary and an action plan completed to ensure the Covid issues have been addressed.

Hopefully this will allow a wider participation for those who want to organise matches. Each League will need to assess what they intend to do for the rest of the season.

BCGBA STATEMENT

Statement from the BCGBA

Following discussions with each County Association and a County level survey on BCGBA National competitions, we have decided to roll over all competitions to 2021. This covers the Men’s, Juniors, Veterans and Ladies competitions.

This means that the fixtures for all our 2020 County Championships (Seniors, Juniors, Ladies) will be moved to 2021, with a subsequent delay in the 5-year rota for the Men’s County Championship.

The Presidential Rota’s will also carry over to 2021 with the Men’s Senior Merit remaining in Cumbria, Junior Merit in Greater Manchester and Ladies Merit in Greater Manchester.

The Men’s World Club Championships Qualifiers for 2020 will also roll over to 2021 and we will issue further information when we are able to do so.

It is hoped to find a suitable date to complete the 2019 Ladies Champions of Champions later in the year, subject to restrictions allowing.

The Handbook 2020 will therefore cover 2020/2021 and an addendum will be produced in 2021 to reflect date changes etc. This will be updated on the website as soon as we are able to confirm dates and agreement with relevant venues.

This decision has been taken to ensure that we are able to protect the safety of our membership as at this time it is not possible to ensure we would be able to complete matches and qualifiers in a safe and secure way.

Following the ongoing situation regarding Covid19 and the impact it is having throughout society as well as sport, we have made the very difficult decision to cancel the Warwick & Worcester League & Cup season for 2020.

We have looked into several ways that bowling could be made possible but kept coming back to the health & safety of our members which has to be paramount within any decision that is made and ultimately, this could not be guaranteed.

The government have made it clear that there will be no team sports possible until the start of June at the earliest but more than likely this would be July and even then, numbers and venues may be restricted. At this point we would be over half way into the season and being able to complete the league programme would be highly unlikely.

As and when any further announcements are made either through the government or BCGBA we will communicate these to you.

National Lottery Funding - Awards for All

This funding is very different to the Sport England Community Emergency Fund, which is designed to help sports club meet their ongoing costs in the face of lost income as a result of the facilities not being used.

Awards for All funding is about funding community based projects that supports those individuals in your communities who are most affected by the Covid-19 crisis. Funding is available from £300-£10,000.

The guidance is straightforward and an easy read.

Lynn is well versed in applying for Grants and funding, and has therefore offered some advice to our members to help them make applications for the above mentioned scheme.

The above will cover costs such as rent, utility costs, insurances, equipment hire and retrospective losses backdated to 1st March 2020. Awards will be made of values from £300 up to £10,000.

The Award criteria will include the following:-

Your Club delivers activity in disadvantaged areas

Your Club includes members from one or more of the following groups:- Women/Girls, Disabled People, People in lower socio-economic groups, Black and Minority Ethnic communities (BAME), Older People and People with long-term health conditions

The financial need to keep your Club going

The impact of not receiving funding

Based on the application and the award criteria here is a list of Do's and Dont's which may be helpful:-

Be honest and state any reserves the Club has.

Emphasise if your Club is located in a disadvantaged area.

Include outline demographic information on your area, e.g. unemployment rate, population demographics, age profile of your community, health data etc. This information should be available through Census data or by contacting your Local Authority

Cite and emphasise all the groups your Club engaged with, e.g. Women/Girls, Older People, BAME, Disabled People, People with long-term health conditions and people in lower socio-economic groups

Emphasise the importance of the role your Club plays in your local community e.g. promoting physical and mental health and well-being, social interaction, combating social isolation/loneliness, engaging with local schools etc

Emphasise how you are maintaining contact with your members

Set out the financial impact between April and June. Cite examples of any mitigating actions the Club is taking.

Cite the minimum outgoings the Club has to meet e.g rent, utility bills etc

Cite examples of the impact of not receiving financial help e.g facilities could fall into a poor state of disrepair and risk being unusable when we emerge from the crisis, risk of losing a vital community asset etc

Cite the impact on club members/the local community e.g decreased physical activity, social isolation, decline in mental health, loss of community facility is a significant risk when it will be most needed when we emerge from the lock-down etc

Be clear and concise

Use simple and easy to understand language

Ensure the level of funding you need is accurate

Don't

Waffle

Use acronyms

Tell blatant lies. Any funding you receive could be subject to audit

Alan Knight Funeral Arrangements

Thursday 2nd April

Alan's funeral arrangements are as follows:-

Alan Knight of New Inns Four Oaks passed away recently. He finally succumbed to a long standing illness which he fought with great courage for a number of years. Alan, who played at The Yew Tree before he came to New Inns never let his illness stop him from bowling to a high standard and was an example to us all. He will be sadly missed.

Thursday 2nd. April 11.30 am at Sutton Coldfield crematorium.

The family have requested no flowers but donations may be made to St. Giles hospice.

Alan's family have decided to postpone the gathering afterwards at The Two Gates Club until we are free of restrictions, when a memorial gathering will be arranged.

Bowling Green Maintenance Suggestions

Working on the fact that we are not bowling at present but hopefully will return later in the season, the following recommendations have been offered to WWCBA and it's bowling members:

Anyone working on the green must follow the government health guidelines, these are changing daily.

While working on the green, it's important to keep social distancing from others that may be carrying out other essential tasks. Keep 2m away and take care with cleaning shared facilities. If lone working make sure someone knows where you are, what you are doing and the time you plan to be there. This will help keep you safe. A working Mobile Phone will be useful but check it regularly as noisy machines & ear defenders may prevent you from hearing. If there are any changes to the plan let people know.

The bowling green is a living thing and even without bowling it could need some level of minimum maintenance.

Mow the green at normal winter height of 8mm to 10mm - Remember do not take more than a third off the plant.
Continue to Verticut or lightly scarify once a month to remove dead material and prevent the build up of thatch (Organic Matter), Only scarify the grass plant.
Aerate the green with a solid or slit tine every 3 months when not bowling, if possible
Continue to apply fertiliser but reduce the nitrogen content as you are mowing less and not creating wear with bowling, perhaps staying with a autumn winter fertiliser is a suggestion.
Treat any pest and diseases as normal.
Edge the greens and clean the pans as needed.
When we can bowl again lower the cut down to 6mm and increase Verticut or light scarification. Remember do not take more than a third off the plant.
Keep equipment and chemicals safe & secure, we know unattended premises will be tempting.

Please do not be tempted to have a practice as this sets a bad impression that bowling is a safe activity, We know that lone bowling could be currently accepted but given recent events where people are attracted to open spaces and flocking together in breach of the 2m zones and that to play a game you would need to be at times within that zone then it is not safe.

If people go within two metres of others who they don't live with then they're helping to spread the virus and the consequences of that costs lives and it means that, for everyone, this will go on for longer. The Health Secretary said the government advice on social distancing was "really clear" and people should stay two metres apart, staying at home if at all possible.

We have learned that some councils have already made a statement regarding Parks and open spaces, that the maintenance of non-essential grass cutting in parks and open spaces, bowling greens, football pitches and roadside grass verges will be suspended for the foreseeable future.

You should consider these suggestions but more important is to ensure safety first, grass will regrow or be replaced, you and others will not.

Urgent note

WWCBA have suspended its 2020 programme following a note from BCGBA see below.

The Government has now advised to avoid non-essential social contact including avoiding pubs, clubs, theatres and other such social venues. Therefore our bowling programme is cancelled until such time it is safe to continue.

We will be in contact with you to keep you informed of developments and bowling events when we are able to recommence.

In the meantime its recommended that no club events are arranged in order to avoid unnecessary social contact which may increase the risk of harm to others.

Most of all keep safe and take care of each other.

WWCBA believe Clubs & Members will not be insured if they carry on against BCGBA advice, therefore all club bowling should also be suspended.

BCGBA Notice

To County Secretaries, Management and Officers.

Following the Government announcement this afternoon it is with great sadness that we now have to suspend all bowling for the foreseeable future.

Based on the advice announced we need to avoid all mass gatherings and sporting event as these will no longer be supported by the emergency services.

If anyone within your household has symptoms then the whole family need to isolate for 14 days.

Limit social contact wherever possible and encourage working from home.

At risk groups - those over 70 and those with medical conditions need to take additional care.

All BCGBA meetings should now be postponed as un-necessary travel should be avoided. Contact in Pubs, Clubs and restaurants to be avoided.

Taking this all into account all leagues should now suspend matches until such time as we are given an all clear to resume competition.

All BCGBA and BCGLCC Competitions are now suspended until further notice this should include all qualifier events.

As a Bowls community we need to look after our members and I encourage you to follow the advice being given and support those we are able to at this very difficult time.

Club Secretaries and Leagues

Sport England Advice has not yet changed so the advice remains:

For now, it doesn't mean you can't still run activities where people gather, and it definitely doesn't mean that people should be discouraged from being active.

In fact, given that being fit and healthy acts as a deterrent to most infections, it's crucial that members of the public continue to lead active lives throughout this period, whether that's using a local gym or walking or cycling, where it’s possible to do so.

Unless there's official advice telling you not to do so, and as long as you follow the government advice on how to avoid catching or spreading the virus, you can continue with things like club sports fixtures, group activities and use leisure facilities.

In every scenario, it’s clear that hand hygiene is critical and if you’re planning to go somewhere that involves using sports equipment, make sure you're thoroughly wiping it down before and after you use it.

WWCBA Sub Committees with the Cups & Merits, League and Safeguarding are focused on giving the right advice at the right time. The Chair people of those committees are regularly in contact with each other and will advise any changes.

WWCBA are considering the various options to have plans in place to react to updates. To give any advice contrary to the Government and Health Organisations would not be appropriate as we are not the experts or qualified to make decisions on those subjects.

WWCBA advice is to encourage all club secretaries & safeguarding officers to have appropriate contact details. These are to serve their members, to give advice and updates about the bowling situation and to provide suitable support for those who may become isolated.

Safeguarding Officers may also need to be vigilant as people become vulnerable and there is an increased risk of scams such as cures, refunds and fake donations.

WWCBA Expect Updates from the NHS on 17th March 2020.

There is no need to e-mail us, unless your club has a specific situation that WWCBA needs to know about.

Please understand we are keeping abreast of all available information and will ensure everyone is updated. We appreciate clubs are starting to mobilise as the spring weather starts but WWCBA cannot impose any postponements, cancellations or changes given current advice.

We will cover many of the laws frequently misunderstood & give guidance on measuring etc.

During the forum we try and cover all the Laws, give guidance on how to pass a Referees exam. we also provide guidance how a Captain may need to know and apply the Laws of the Game in a League Match situation.

The price remains at just £5 should people wish to attend.

We will arrange exam dates for those wishing to prove their knowledge and sit the BCGBA Referee Exam, previous candidates have coped with sitting the exam with attending just one forum.

To sit the British Crown Green Referee exam and is £5 per candidate payable to BCGRS and we can run these to suit the individuals.

Emergency Flood Relief Fund

Grants of National Lottery funding up to £5,000 could help repair damage to greens and facilities.

Storm damaged pitches and facilities could be back in use sooner than expected thanks to our new emergency flood relief fund.

The effects of Storms Ciara and Dennis are still being fully assessed but, in an attempt to rectify the damage as soon as possible, local authorities and community sports organisations are being invited to apply for a grant of up to £5,000 to pay for emergency repairs.

Gale force winds and torrential rain left pitches, pavilions and floodlights in a state of disrepair, with Cumbria, Lancashire and Yorkshire among the worst-hit areas by Ciara, before Dennis hit towns on the banks of the River Severn.

The grants, which will come from our Community Asset Fund, can be provided in as little as three weeks. But our chief executive, Tim Hollingsworth, has highlighted where attentions should be focused.

“When flooding happens, the priority must be making sure people are safe, they can get back into their homes and vital public services are back up and running,” he said.

“But we know from the floods in 2013 and 2015 that flood water can cause significant damage to sports pitches and pavilions, changing and social facilities.

“We’re making emergency funding available now so when the time is right sports organisations can pay for rebuilds and repairs quickly.

“We want to ensure that the sports facilities in local communities that help keep people physically active are not forgotten in the floods so they are ready to use as soon as people want them.”

The grants could typically be used to restore grass pitches, to repair and decontaminate flood or wind-damaged clubhouses, replace damaged electrical systems or dredge blocked drains.

Our Community Asset Fund was designed to help communities quickly respond to emergencies or unexpected events that stop people from being active.

From damaged sports club roofs to areas hit by flood damage, our team aims to provide quick responses to those most badly affected.

Yorkshire Sport Foundation chief executive officer Nigel Harrison said his organisation is working with local authorities, national governing bodies and partner organisations in the west and south of the county to assess the full extent of the damage.

“The impact is far reaching and covers large parts of the area,” he said. “We welcome Sport England's early intervention, and we look forward to working with them to help get the affected clubs and facilities up and running again as soon as possible.”

After a long struggle Colin Weaver has passed away, he was a member of K.H.P. W.E.Cons, and a previous W&W County Player for many seasons.

The funeral will take place on Tuesday 23 JULY @ SUTTON COLDFIELD CREMATORIUM B75 6LG, At 10-00a.m.

Afterwards at the Crown F.G..M.N. FROM 12-00 onwards.

Veterans County Championship Finals

I am pleased to confirm that the finals of 2019 Veterans County Championship, which will be contested between Lancashire, Potteries & District, Warwick & Worcester and Yorkshire, will be held at Ashton Cricket Club (OL7 0AU) on Thursday 1st August .

Ashton Cricket Club is just two minutes off the M60 junction and the entrance to the green is opposite KFC on Lord Sheldon Way. The club will provide food and drink from 9.15am and the bar will be open from 12 noon.

The finals will follow the same format as the regional qualifying rounds with all matches played on a round-robin basis, 21up off 3, the winners being the county with the most points.

W&W Mens Veterans Qualify for Finals Day

Congratulations to our Mens Vets team who qualified from the group stages of the Vets County Championship at the Goodyear BC, Pavilion Club, The Pavilion, Stafford Road, Wolverhampton WV10 6AJ.

The squad made up of: Bill Kinchin, Bob Hickman, Ron Regan, Tony Eaves, Colin Ashfield, Dave Clarke, Bob Jones, Steve Davies and Tony Toal played against Staffordshire, Shropshire and North Mids.

Three Merit Finals in 2 weekends.

Sunday 23rd June saw two of the Associations Merit finals come to completion.

At Boldmere Sports and Social the congratulations went to Ryan Prosser who won the W&W 2019 David Perry Mens Individual Merit beating Josh Hale 21 – 15 in a fantastic final. Six qualifiers represent W&W at the All Britain at Rolls-Royce BC in Derbyshire.

Also on 23rd June was the re-arranged weather affected Ladies Merit Final at Moor Lane.

Congratulations to Steph Witherspoon on winning the W&W 2019 Debbie Williams Individual Ladies Merit . In an extremely close fought final Steph overcame Emily Kernick 21-18 and both played amazing.

Well done to the 4 players who have qualified for the ladies All Britain:
Steph Witherspoon, Emily Kernick, Maliza Herbert & Anne O’Loughlin.

Sunday 30th June, and it was the time of our Juniors at Solihull Marsh Lane.

Warwick & Worcester are trying to retain the “Alan Powell Shield” which they have won for the last two years.
