W&W Make Flying Start to Crosfield Cup Campaign
Warwick & Worcester got their 2026 Crosfield Cup campaign off to a superb start, recording an impressive 40-shot aggregate victory over Greater Manchester after coming out on top in both the home and away legs.
This year’s format sees W&W placed in a three-team group alongside Greater Manchester and Merseyside, meaning every match carries extra importance—and getting a win in the opening fixture was vital in the push to qualify for the next stage.
The home leg at The George, Warley saw W&W produce a strong overall performance, but it wasn’t all straightforward early on. After the opening four games across both greens, W&W actually found themselves trailing by 14 shots overall, highlighting just how competitive the tie was at that stage.
From there, however, the momentum swung firmly in W&W’s favour. A string of big wins turned the tie around, with the home side going on to secure a convincing 31-shot victory, finishing with eight individual winners.
There were some standout displays, none more so than Greg Smith’s emphatic 21–2 win, one of the results of the day. He was well supported by Mike Hill (21–12) and Darren Round (21–13), while Mike Hill was rightly named Warwick & Worcester man of the match for the home leg, recognising his key contribution.
The return leg in Greater Manchester, played on the large Stalybridge and Dukinfield green, provided a different test. It also saw Greater Manchester’s Chris Eaton claim the BCGBA Howden man of the match award, thanks to his clinical win over James Seville.
Despite the tougher conditions away from home, W&W showed real resilience and strength in depth. The side produced seven winners, enough to secure a hard-earned 9-shot victory and complete the double.
Leading the way were the Moseley pairing of Scott Follis (21–9) and Adam Kirby (21–11), both producing key performances under pressure. Adam Kirby’s display earned him the Warwick & Worcester man of the match award for the away leg, capping an excellent all-round contribution across the tie.
They were well backed by Elliot McGuinness (21–12) and Michael Lynch (21–14), whose results played a crucial role in sealing the overall win.
Taken together, it was a strong, composed team display, made even more impressive by the way W&W recovered from an early deficit to take control of the tie.
With that crucial opening win secured, W&W now enjoy a well-earned break in June, before returning for their final group fixture against Merseyside in July, where victory could prove decisive in securing qualification.
