Ladies Senior County Match Report
Close, but satisfying victory for ladies
Warwick & Worcester Ladies began their 2026 BCGBA Ladies Senior County campaign with an impressive victory over Burton & District, securing a strong aggregate win across both the home and away legs.
This year’s competition sees W&W placed in Group 4 alongside Burton & District, Lancashire and Mid Cheshire, meaning every match carries added importance, with only the strongest sides progressing from what promises to be a competitive section
Both sides faced off over two contrasting venues—Solihull Marsh Lane for the home leg and Stretton No.1 Green in Burton for the return—knowing that a positive start would be key in setting the tone for the campaign.
The opening leg at Solihull Marsh Lane proved to be a closely contested affair throughout. Despite the match being evenly balanced on games, with both sides recording six winners apiece, Warwick & Worcester’s superior scoring proved decisive as they secured a 15-shot victory, 214–199.
That scoreline reflected just how tight the contest was, with margins ultimately making the difference. Several strong individual performances helped build that advantage, most notably Ann Marie Parsons’ outstanding 21–3 win, the standout result of the leg and a crucial contribution to the overall total.
She was well supported across the card, with Sharnie Harvey (21–12) and Christine Harvey (21–9) both producing impressive wins, while further contributions from Megan Recardo (21–18), Jan Pratley (21–14), and Sarah Sterland (21–17) ensured W&W maintained control despite Burton matching them game for game.
Burton & District, however, pushed them all the way. A number of tight victories—including Wendy Jackson’s 21–18 success and Sophie Oxtoby’s narrow 21–19 win—highlighted the depth of the visitors, while Danniella Hartshorn’s 21–10 result was one of their most convincing performances on the day.
Jackson’s display earned her the home-leg MVP award, recognising her consistency in what was a finely balanced contest.
The return leg at Stretton No.1 Green in Burton offered a different challenge, with the away side needing to respond under unfamiliar conditions. The match once again proved competitive, with Burton edging the leg on games 7–5, but Warwick & Worcester once again showed their strength in scoring, taking the aggregate on the day 219–204 to complete the overall victory.
There were some important performances across the team, most notably Michelle Witherspoon’s excellent 21–8 win, one of the standout results of the away leg, along with solid contributions from Steph Witherspoon (21–15), Sonia Robson (21–9), Maureen Gamble (21–10), and Jayne Bates (21–15), all of which helped maintain W&W’s overall advantage.
Leading the way was Emily Weaver, whose composed performance earned her the away-leg MVP award, capping a strong team display under pressure on a difficult away green.
Taken together, it was a disciplined and well-balanced performance across both legs. Warwick & Worcester combined resilience in tightly contested games with the ability to produce big-score wins when it mattered most—ultimately proving decisive across the tie.
With that opening win secured, W&W now turn their attention to their next fixture, where they will face Lancashire in June, a match that could prove crucial in shaping the outcome of Group 4.
