Bank Holiday joy for West Brom Duo

West Bromwich FSC celebrated a memorable Bank Holiday weekend at Fleetwood, as Greg Smith and Rachel Bennett completed a superb double by winning the Men’s and Ladies Spring Waterloo titles.

The traditional Spring Waterloo festival once again delivered a high standard of competition across the Bank Holiday weekend, with the Ladies event taking centre stage on Sunday before the Men’s competition reached its conclusion on Monday.

The PHH Ladies Spring Waterloo, held on Sunday, attracted a strong field for the one-day event, and it was Rachel Bennett who proved to be the standout performer. Producing a series of composed displays, she progressed through the draw to reach the final, where she faced Louise Ollerton.

Bennett rose to the occasion in the decider, delivering a controlled performance to secure a 21–12 victory and claim the title in style.

Ollerton, meanwhile, produced an excellent run to the final and can take plenty of positives from a strong showing throughout the day.

The semi-finals also saw a strong West Bromwich presence, with Bennett joined in the latter stages by team-mate and close friend Jordan Picken, who enjoyed an impressive run before bowing out with a 21–14 defeat, narrowly missing out on an all–West Bromwich final.

Attention then turned to the Men’s Spring Waterloo on Bank Holiday Monday, where Greg Smith produced another outstanding campaign to retain the title he won in 2025—and in doing so, further etched his name into the competition’s history.

Smith’s victory marked a remarkable milestone, securing his fifth win in the event overall, with two titles at the Waterloo and three at Fleetwood Bowling Club, underlining his status as one of the competition’s most successful players.

He faced Paul Turner in the final and once again delivered when it mattered most, producing a composed display to secure a 21–12 victory and successfully defend his crown.

The semi-finals were equally competitive, with Smith overcoming Lee Johnstone 21–18 in a tightly contested encounter, while Turner edged past Ben Gloag 21–19 to reach the final.

Taken together, Bennett’s success on Sunday and Smith’s triumph on Monday ensured a superb double for West Bromwich FSC, capping a highly successful Bank Holiday for the club on one of the sport’s biggest stages.

The weekend once again highlighted the strength and depth within the club, with multiple players featuring prominently and delivering high-level performances throughout.

Both events were well supported, with thanks extended to PHH for their sponsorship across the weekend, as well as all players who competed in making the competitions another success.

Appreciation also goes to the organisers, referees, and volunteers, along with Fleetwood Bowling Club, for their hospitality in hosting and ensuring the smooth running of another excellent Spring Waterloo festival.
