New Veterans County Event

17 May 2026

Two Associations, One Goal!

The inaugural fixture of the combined Veterans County Team representing the Warwickshire and Worcestershire Counties Bowling Association (WWCBA) and the Warwickshire County Parks Bowling Association (WCP) took place on 17 May 2026 in the British Park, Esselle Bowling Veterans County Championship.

Competing together for the first time under the Warwickshire banner, the away squad travelled to Rolleston Club, near Burton-upon-Trent, to face East Midlands. For many of the players, this was a completely new experience at the county level, and while expectations were uncertain, all anticipated strong opposition.

Although the overall result was disappointing, with Warwickshire's away squad defeated by 80 shots, the scoreline did not fully reflect the quality and determination shown by the side. Four members of the squad suffered narrow single-figure defeats, demonstrating the competitive nature of the contest.

From the ten-player away team, Kevin Hackett (Water Orton), a long-serving representative of the WCP Senior County team, secured Warwickshire’s sole victory with a hard-fought 21–17 win. Graham Savage of (Woodbourne) was narrowly defeated 19–21 following a gripping contest lasting over an hour and a quarter, while Keith Hanley (Water Orton), came agonisingly close before eventually losing 18–21.

The Warwickshire players performed admirably on what proved to be a difficult and unfamiliar green against highly experienced opposition. Every point had to be earned through hard work and concentration, with the East Midlands side clearly benefiting from both experience and local knowledge. One East Midlands player, Paul Stretton, marking his 100th county appearance with the best win 21-7 on the day, had even played a league match on the same green the previous evening.

Despite the result, the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all involved. The fixture represented an exciting new venture for the players, who appreciated the opportunity to experience a different venue, quality opposition, and an excellent team atmosphere. The day concluded with refreshments and food generously provided by the host club.

At the home venue, Boldmere Sports and Social Club hosted the corresponding fixture. Heavy rain before the start neutralised the green conditions for both teams; however, Warwickshire made an excellent start. Tony Freeth of (Boldmere Sports) and Ronnie Reagan (Mosely CC) secured impressive victories of 21–18 and 21–15 respectively.

Further successes came from Paul Buckley of (Drakes Drum), another dedicated servant of the WCP Senior County team, who recorded a 21–17 victory. Chris Baker (Triplex and Tanworth in Arden), and widely respected within WWCBA circles as one of the driving forces behind this joint venture with Phil Ellett to provide greater opportunities for veteran players aged over 60, delivered an outstanding performance to record Warwickshire’s best win of the day at 21–11. Ultimately, a good battle at home yesterday by all the guys, some close-fought games all got at least double figures and losing by just 21 shots against a very good and very experienced East Midlands side.

Overall, the match proved to be an enjoyable and positive experience for everyone involved, with players already looking forward to the second group fixture scheduled for 21 June 2026 against Yorkshire.
