Howden's Senior County Championship
Sunday 3rd May
Today marks the opening fixture of the men’s county season, and Warwick & Worcester begin their campaign in Group 4, a compact group made up of just three counties: ourselves, Greater Manchester, and Merseyside. With only two group matches to play, every result carries added significance and there is very little room for error.
That makes this opening game especially important. A positive start would immediately place Warwick & Worcester in a strong and favourable position to progress from the group, whereas a defeat would leave no margin for slip‑ups later in the campaign.
We face Greater Manchester first, and the outcome of today’s match will heavily shape the group’s direction. A win today would give us momentum and breathing space, with a full month to prepare for the final group fixture against Merseyside. That break would allow the squad time to reflect, refine, and prepare thoroughly, knowing that progression remains firmly in our own hands.
However, should the result go against us, the situation becomes far more demanding. We would then face Merseyside next month in what would be an unavoidable must‑win encounter if we are to have any chance of advancing into the knockout stages. With such a short group format, there is no opportunity to recover from slow starts — every end and every shot matters.
Today’s home fixture is being played at The George, Warley, with play starting at 2.00pm. Support is always invaluable at this level, and anyone who finds themselves free this afternoon is encouraged to come along and enjoy what promises to be a high‑quality contest. County bowling offers an excellent standard of play, competitive but sporting, and is always well worth watching.
Meanwhile, the away game is taking place at Stalybridge & Dukinfield Recreation Bowling Club, ensuring a full afternoon of county action as both greens look to set the tone for the season.
With the season finally underway, today represents both a fresh start and an early test — one that could very well define Warwick & Worcester’s path in the 2026 campaign.
